Here is my two cents.
I only buy from breeders it people I know, because you don't know what you are getting from just any Ol' person on the net. Even then you take a chance of bringing bugs or diseases that your chickens haven't been exposed to and your chickens can get sick and die. Even if those chickens look healthy for the 30 days of quarantine. They can show some signs of being sick from the stress of the move
It is always a gamble, and for $6 I would be worried about their age. I would think that they are old and won't be laying well. Mist people sell young layers for more than that because they have raised them and fed them but aren't going to benefit from the fruits of that labor. Just my thoughts.

Thank you for your thoughts. I ask for advice, because I truly want the info, whether good, bad or indifferent. I will not take offense to people trying to help me. I am trying to do a good thing for my family, so I certainly want to make sure that I am doing it at least mostly right. I appreciate all the help that the group members give, that is why I asked the questions.

Yay!!! I just found already laying hens for 6 bucks a piece. I am going to take a look at them in a little bit. They are missing most of their tail feathers, but they should grow back ok, right? I will have to keep them separate from my chicks for awhile, so I will have to maybe put them in my not yet usable greenhouse for a bit. He seems to have a lot of chickens, could stress cause loss of tail feathers or would other chickens have pulled them out maybe? They should be ok with a little TLC though, right?

Missing feathers may also be from being with a rooster. Like Kim mentioned, try to find out how old they are.
You asked about re-feathering. They will grow new feathers after they molt rather than the continuous regrowth of human hair.

Something good to check, also, is the soles of their feet. Look for black spots and/or swelling and they might walk with a limp. That would be bumble foot. I learned the hard way, you don't want to have to deal with that. Just say no to black spots on the sole of their feet!

Are you wanting tame birds? If his are part of a large flock they probably aren't friendly nor would they likely become friendly.

I love this!

My pen is pretty narrow, only 5' wide. It's covered with corrugated polycarbonate/fiberglass sheets (the stuff from Lowes) and it overhangs the edge of the coop. In our case the rain comes in from the South, right into their pen, so I understand exactly what you're talking about. I'd love it if the overhang was at least 12" but I couldn't do it where it's located. The other thing I have is a clear tarp that hangs down on the side of the pen to within about a foot of the ground. I use large cup hooks screwed into the wood at the top and the grommets on the tarp just hook on. The sand won't stay bone dry, but dry enough. Most of the time the rain isn't that bad, just those nasty storms we get some times. It isn't enough to be a major issue.
Very good to know! I am going to build my coop on the north side of my garage, so the south side will be wall. And the east side will be fence. The clear tarp idea sounds great for the winter, and I hope to have the same roofing material, with part of it a living roof. I'm so excited to build this! Silly question but, where do you buy the sand?

Stupid phone this morning

Dang chick that had pipped wrong end hit vein while zipping this afternoon . I couldn't ge it to stop bleeding. Flicked off the shell and used the back end of a needle to get thread under the vein and tie it off. Then I carefully hatched it. It spent a hour and half on my chest under a heating pad since I don't have an incubator. That little thing is full of pep and vinegar. It's standing and squirming finally got me to take it back out to the silkie. It happily crawled under her and she tucked it in next to the other. I think it will be just fine.

So it looks like I have one wheaten and one I don't know. I was sure the egg was from an ameraucana. It was blue and not from the one EE I have that lays blue eggs. What would a silver/wheaten cross chick look like?

So with new hatched chicks under a broody at this time, if I find any chicks I want on Sat, I can get them.

Wow - this is fantastic. I don't know that I would have known to tie off the vein, great job saving the little chick!!!

Skipped TONS on here since I got so behind when I was sick last weekend. Hope all is well!

SO, I'm a crazy nut-job.......

We (my DD and I, anyway) LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!!! There are 4 layer chicks, 3 meaties, 2 turkey poults, 3 ducklings, and 2 goslings! Boy are those waterfowl MESSY! I read somewhere "they have a special relationship with their water" and they weren't kidding! The goslings and poults are so amazingly personable! The way the goslings look at you make it seem that there is more of a brain in them than the rest. The separating wall already needs to be opened up between the 2 brooder pens as these guys are extremely active and busy!!!

I have not made lavender honey, sounds yummy! I do have an almost castille lavender-infused olive oil soap, and a regular lavender.

Yay!! Thank you! Knowing what to look for is what I needed. He said that they would be easy to catch, so I will test the tameness while I look. I don't have to buy them if I am not happy with what I see. I have only purchased a fully grown flock once. I got 9 hens and 2 roosters from a lady off of CL for I think $30. They were all in full feather and beautiful. She had the most awesome coop setup I had ever seen, it was one of the stalls in her barn that she converted.
