Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So I tried to grab quick pics of the chicks with my phone. Squirmy things didn't want to sit still and wanted back under mama.

My backward chick

And I've decided this one is half ameraucana, half hatchery EE. It has chipmunk patterning on it's back.

Yay!!! Babies are much more fun anyways!!! They get to get used to your lifestlye and personalities. Our family car is a 'Burban too, so I know how that goes. I am trying

to get to Monroe tomorrow, if DH will go. I really want to add a Columbian Wyandotte or other mostly white chick to my flock, I would feel they would be complete yard eye candy then

We'll see, he gets off at 6am Sat morning, so I doubt he would be up for it. Maybe I can hitch a ride with TacomaFarms? Maybe with a couple kids in tow, how many depends on how much room you have, lol! Or, since I have a 'Burban Beast you can ride with me...?

My Auntie had a Macaw (you have a parrot? IDK birds, they creep me out [the chickens are therapy]:0) he was HUGE and probably added to my fear of winged things. I remember him living a long time, though.
I am so excited. Also, Graham Hay Market will special order my Cochin with their new order for just the price of the bird. The problem is, I cannot decide on color. So many choices!!!

My 'Burban is a '97 3/4 ton, so I am lucky if I get 15 MPG/hwy. I think now that the girls are all grown, I should just put it on CL and get something a little more efficient. My dream is to own a Macaw...maybe once I get the farm more functional. I have always wanted one, but wanted to start off smaller. I started with a Cockatiel, then added a Senegal and the Amazon. I love them, both the Senegal and Amazon talk. The Senegal also does the microwave, the coffee pot, frog sounds and the puppy's squeaky toy. It's quite entertaining. Anyway, off to get my brooder ready and then go order my chicks!! Yay!!

I wish I had a farm! I can't even begin to help you pick a color, lol... I go with the most color in the coop. My mother taught me that on my dinner plate, it's affected me. haha!

My neighbor has a parrot of some sort, perhaps he will login here and share more, but it's so funny! I can hear it squaking from my porch, which is usually followed by his DW coming out to tell me how annoying "Minny" can be when she's trying to nap.

So I checked my hovabator this morning and the temp running 99.5 - 99.8 and the humidity is sitting right at 52%. That right around what it should be. I am gonna keep checking it every few hours and hope everything stays well... Although there is a SLIGHT fluctuation in the temp I figured it was ok because it such a small amount... BUT PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

functional? Parrots? no...they are solely in the domain of children you sometimes think twice about having got. Turkeys do a lot of bug eating and dethatching in the yard but will deberry a bush in no time. Muscovys can be the best city duck there is since they don't quack. But you have to watch that they don't mate in the wild. Some states have laws against that. But!, they love mosquitos, bugs, and slugs, and wag their tails for you when it's feed or treat time.

Coop question: I am building coop #2 with a run this weekend at some point (between cleaning, gardening, and bunny cage building). How high do you place your roosts for LF? I have a short roost in their current coop, which they haven't used since they gained access to their nesting boxes.

I see some coops with really high roosts and some with lower roosts, which is best?

That sounds cool! I want a duck that thinks its a dog! I will justly name it dog. hehe!

I have a chicken named dog, because she chases my dog! haha!

If you ask the chickens, they will say the higher the better. I have two 2x4s attached to some old saw horses for my roosts. There is the crate lid from our wood stove in there as well that is at the same height. They can use the nest boxes to hop up on the roosts, but they never do. They'd rather just find an empty inch and fly up landing on whomever is already there. Or if they are high in the pecking order, they'll just get up on the edge and peck everyone in the way out of it until they get the spot they want.
