Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Nasty wind out there. I'm really glad I anchored the quarantine coop to the ground. We are NOT having a repeat of the last one flying through the air. I also put the tarp up at 45 degrees to what it was last time. Lets the wind go over the top better.

Woke up to a yard looking like it decided to give up and become part of the big pond. I'm really glad all the chickens are on higher, or filled in higher ground.

I let the big birds out to free range, much to the dismay of the silkies. They want out so bad. Mama will take the chicks out if I open the door and I have to sit out and watch over the chicks to make sure nothing airborne gets them.

My sex confused hen even joined the boys in crowing at me to get me to come over and let them out. She's laid me a total of 2 eggs, both back in September a few days apart. Then her comb started growing a bit bigger, but not rooster huge. She still acts mostly like a hen, looks mostly like a hen, and the boys treat her as one. She doesn't like to squat for them, but I watched the cockerel mount her the other day. That's surprising because she's usually kicking his rear for grabbing the other girls and making them yell. She only crows when she wants something. Normally only when I come out first thing in the morning and am getting scratch for them.

On a surprise note this morning, I have a cavity!!!

It decided that it would let me know it was there, by crumbling 1/3 of my tooth away after this morning's breakfast...Yippee! Dentist appt in 30 mins.....

Ouch! I hope they get you taken care of quickly!

I should have gone out and bustled around about three hours ago, but I was waiting for the painkillers to kick in; they haven't, and it's nearly time for another round, think I'll try Ibuprofen this time.

Have gotten a little laundry started and eaten both breakfast and lunch, or at least most of lunch, and am resigned to wearing a garbage bag kilt under my raincoat and working hard in the wet, since the radar says I've missed my sun window.

Happy spring!

Anyone have any tips on what to do if the power goes out when incubating eggs? I am only on day 4 and I dont wanna loose them but its really bad here crossing fingers it doesnt go out!

A short cooling off period won't harm them. I know some people will disagree with me, but if my power went out, I'd throw a blanket over the incubator to help retain heat. You have a fairly big one, yes? That will also retain heat longer than a small one.

It's true -- they will be ok for a few hours without the power. The blanket thing is perfect to help keep the incubator warm. I've had to do that before myself. Try not to open the incubator at all to keep all the heat/humidity in as much as possible too. :)

CR -- I remember that story too!! The eggs in 'pockets' hahah!!

On another note, I did get 7 eggs outta 8 hens today.

Skinny, my slender, affectionate RIR is teasing me about being broody but not real sure at this time. I keep finding down feathers in all the usual places but not enough to tell the difference on any particular hen. Hoping at least one of them go broody, I would like to see some "home made" chicks running around with their momma.

I think my "getup and go" has got up and went with this weather. Got things todo but keep coming up with reasons not to do them.

Check her breast mine pull their feathers out when they are getting broody.

And we had a rodent get inside again. Eww. I totally hate that. Last one was in January. My little 5 pound female kitten killed it. She wasn't going to give it up. I had to offer her treats in exchange. I'll gladly pay them for doing their job.

On the other type of pest note, we haven't caught whatever killed Owl. I have the trap set and baited out there still. Only thing I've caught is Luke, the male kitten, who got to curious and went in after the food. I've had the dogs out peeing all over the place regularly. Maybe they've scared it off.

By any chance do you have a gas fireplace that will run during a power out? If your water heater is gas it will continue to operate as will your stove thus giving you a way to do hot water bottles (even with zip loc bags). Disposable hand warmers and towels. Our trailer has it's own furnace, stove, and power. Know anyone with a generator? I hope your power stays on!
Sry I had to take the baby to go get her shots... Trees down everywhere... 47 mph winds and my back gate on my fence is broken... And they are saying its going to get worst!!! NO We dont have any gas... I am hoping it doesnt go off and if it does I will break out my camp stove to heat up water bottles... I read they are fine up to 20 hrs if they temp drops below 90? But I called my husband and told him I need to order the 12 vt adapter.. so that way happen again I will have a back up. So nerve wracking.... UGH
