Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi everyone,

Very sad news to share. My favorite hen, Ameracauna, who had just been laying for a week or two had a terrible situation Saturday night. I can home around 1:30 a.m. to find her roosting with the other two birds. But I saw a huge mass hanging out of her, at least 6 to 8 inches long.

Long story short we had to kill her to put her out of pain. I knew what to do for being egg bound, but nothing we did worked, or even seemed to help. We put her in warm water, we tried to manipulate the egg out, she was whimpering (who knew our birdies could whimper?!) and it was obvious that nothing we could do for her would save her.

To describe the situation in full detail here would be pretty graphic: her situation was much worse than ANYTHING I could find online or within this community. I could not bear to take a photo of it. The egg was physically outside of her body, but so were a ton of her insides. It was gruesome.

So around 3 a.m. we killed her. This is my first flock, my sweetest bird, my only blue egg layer. I was a WRECK on Sunday and am still pretty choked up about it.

I am now to the stage where I want to get a new bird, but I am pretty sure introducing one bird to an established flock doesn't go so well. I have been searching Craigslist for blue egg layers. I thought about chicks, but husband isn't interested in spending all that time.

Advice?

That is completely wretched. I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye to your favorite girl in such a terrible way.

one should do a 30 DAY QUARANTINE for ALL NEW BIRDS.

I thought I would share one of my new chicks I got down here in CA from CaliforniaCountryRanch. A sizzle silkie. I am enjoying these babies so much. Back to taking pictures. This is #1 of 15. Two weeks old.

Kathy

Ahh, too cute! A what? Sizzle? Wow, one more type of bird to tempt me. Although, I am putting those bantam cochin eggs in the bator next week and I was reading about Silkie/Cochin crosses and I've got those pretty Silkies already and... hmm... maybe I'd better go pay some bills and stop thinking.

After you pulled them did you open a few so you could tell when they stopped? That could tell you if your humidity is correct for lock down and if it is infectious( black gunk). You can find charts on development so you can tell when they stopped. Sorry this happened to you, don't let it stop you though. Your ideas for sterilizing and trial eggs is good.

i did open a few. One was just to big for the egg I think it took up ALL the shell inside, some looked like they stopped before lockdown. And a dark brown one looked like it wasn't fertile.

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet bird. It sounds like you did the best you could by her, no matter how painful or horrific it was for you. I know a few of us are either hatching or raising Ameraucana chicks right now and I'm pretty sure others of us have some available. I'll keep an ear out. My Wheaten Ameraucanas are due to hatch Monday but won't be ready to go to new homes for close to 6-8 weeks, and I already have 2 pullets promised if I am lucky enough to hatch 2!
You could try to PM CowGirlGrace and see if she has any Ameraucana pullets she'd be willing to sell. She's just less than 30 minutes across the Narrows Bridge.
Sorry...

Good for you I let one of my hens set on a clutch and they were growing when we checked @ 14 days. I dont know what happened when they never hatched. The hen was doing everything right.

Not going to sugar coat it. I've always had parrots and budgies and was always told and read it as well, one you see a bird with symptoms, it's often too late. You done good with what you did.
Anyway, I'm reducing my flock, but I'm up in Blaine. Mine lay olive and blue eggs.

I find that newly introduced hens take a day or two to settle in but then do great. There is always a pecking order to deal with and once that is established, all is fine.
