Speaking of orchids, I got a neat one for mom at the plant show in Seattle a few years ago. I first saw Dracula bela at UW during a trip to the greenhouse for a biology class. It took a while, but it finally bloomed last year! It looked really cool. Next time it blooms, I'll take some pictures. Mom typically doesn't do too well with orchids outside of Phalaenopsis and the Lady's Slipper assortment, so I was quite pleased that it's still alive and blooming successfully.

Wow! Those are neat pedals! I love this one - the Monkey Face Orchid (I don't do well with scientific names)

YES! And, if anyone is interested - in Tacoma, is The Birthing Inn. They are WONDERFUL! You might as well be at home. I abhor hospitals!!! I have checked myself and baby out early EVERY time. There was no reason for me to stay 48 hours other than to charge my insurance!

Finally someone gets it! Birth is NOT a reason to go to the hospital UNLESS mother or baby are suspected to be ill. Birth is not a sickness! I find it so strange that everyone else in the hospital is sick, but the maternity ward. Why bring a baby into the world in a house of sickness? Ew. I'd much rather be at my own home knowing my baby is safe and well. And don't get me started on the exploitation of finances/insurance related to "necessary procedures" during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Ugh.

Audie - I started off going to Pearl Place and planning on a birth at TBI but even they were too medical minded for me. They were requiring a bunch of extra tests when I was pregnant with Jeanine it was ridiculous. I finally switched to Nancy Spencer over in Lake Tapps Lakeside Birth Center and had William/Jeanine at home.

I'm wondering if those roosters were beating him up in the end.  That place has a lot of chickens, very many of them roosters.  It wouldn't surprise me if that's why he's missing so many feathers.  I'll admit that one of my first thoughts when I saw him was that maybe they should just put him out of his misery.  I'm going to get as much information about him as I can before I make my final decision.  If he can live out a more normal, peaceful life here, I will do what I can for him.

During my shift yesterday, two roosters were fighting constantly.  They were in the turkey pen.  The turkeys decided that they wanted in on the action and chased them around, beating up on whoever.  There was a girl working in that pen.  She did nothing.  I had to actually convince her to take two seconds to call the staff on her walkie-talkie.  I just didn't want someone to end up being killed.  Since that would have happened if no one was around (it's a very large farm with not-too-many people), it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't monitoring Rodney and his brood and the other roosters were beating him up.  Hell, I noticed one of the chicken runs behind a barn with three hens in the run.  The door to the house was shut and there was no food or water in the run, and also no shelter.  It was late in the afternoon.  I couldn't find anyone in the area to tell them, so I had to get in there and open the door for them.  They promptly hustled in there.  The problem isn't that they're neglecting the animals, it's just that they don't have nearly enough people to be able to catch these things happening.  That's the problem when you rely on volunteers and only have a few staff

It sounds like they've taken on more animals than they can reasonably care for...

Does anyone know how to care for Orchids?  Or have good luck with them? I keep getting them as gifts, and I can't keep em alive for a even a week! Maybe they're allergic to me...

I have one right now that isn't dead, yet, if anyone wants it. Please, save it!

My orchids seem to thrive on neglect. At my old job we got a fresh centerpiece in the reception area every month and it always included a few potted orchids, so we took turns bringing them home. My have survived for 7+ years. I keep them in north and east facing windows and remember to water them every couple weeks or so. I put them in the sink and give them a good soak. They're potted in bark and are in orchid pots.

Well take into consideration one is a bird dog and from what I have seen and been told one isn't really known for it's intelligence. 

My bird dogs (Pointers, Lab, Golden Retriever) have been very good with my ducks and geese. My new Pointer pup is VERY interested in my Serama chickens, chicks, and ducklings, so I wouldn't trust him alone with them, but he leaves the adult waterfowl alone. I think it really depends on how you raise the pup and the individual dog. My current Pointer got WAY more interested in birds in general after we started him on birds and training for hunt tests. After he had that first quail in his mouth, he became obsessed!

And yeah, boxers aren't known for their brains.

She lives near me in Carnation, WA. I got a good chunk of her stock and she doesn't have any more to sell....I bought all she would sell me!


So my game plan to get the eggs from these hens and either sell them or hatch and sell or keep the chick to add to my flock.

I just refused to take any test I thought was asinine. I don't like those glucose screens they do to you at what, 7 months? I just couldn't figure out what the point was that far along? If something wasn't workin' I would have figured out out before 7 months!

Amy was very understanding when I told her which ones I didn't want to do.

That sounds like a nice place! I had never heard about it, funny how these kind of things "stay in the dark". Of course your health care provider won't tell you there are other ways...smh...

Once I read that article about the mom who lost all of her limbs to a flesh eating bacteria after childbirth because of the doctor who delivered her baby...gets me livid. Hospitals are for folks feeling ill, not for new ones

Edited - in no way shape or form am I condemning those who gave birth in a hospital! My first, I had when I was 17 and had no clue, so I just did what my Auntie told me to do and he was born at Mt Carmel in Colville. My second I didn't have to birth (thank You God! That kid has a big head!) My third I had in the Birthing Inn. My fourth and fifth were born in hospitals in Iowa because my insurance wouldn't cover a midwife at home. Yes, I said hospitalS, and hated both of them. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Some women have no choice for the life of them or their baby to be in the hospital, and am thankful they have one to go to!

I am now realizing mine at home is in an Eastern window. I have some in the office, where there are a ton of windows, so they are on a far wall and in the middle on my desk. They have been doing great! One bloomed for almost two months!
