Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Pretty chickens too!

Evidence as to wy I should not contemplate welding: Lunch today involved dropping one can, two shrimp, a closed package of saltines, a can of olives, and three forks.

At least all of them were room temperature or below.

Aaargh!

Went to the doctor and have to keep the neck brace on at least 3 more weeks. I keep looking at all the projects everyone out there is doing, and I'm staring skyward. Can't even drive with the darned thing on so have to wait for weekends for hubby to drive me around.

Stumpfarmer - never understood how you got stir crazy - it's not being able to get around. I'm going nuts here.

So, I'm trying to do some sewing. Right now I'm just finishing the pattern making stage ready for the fabric (custom design and measurements). I just took out the fabric to start cutting. It's hard though. I have lots of fabrics to choose from.
(don't tell doc, I take the brace off for this bit!)

Can't do much in the yard though. It's going to get worse before it gets better. Pruning will just have to wait.

And, himself and I decided to get rid of ALL the birds (ducks and chickens) this year, and start over. We shall be reseeding the pasture and designing a new coop with storage. We will fence round the pond so the goats don't eat the ornamental trees, but they will have access to the whole pasture (since they don't bother the grass much.
(edited to correct typos)

This is how the pond area "should" look!

Beautiful work CR!!!

Sorry to hear about the cream legbar chicks -

Everyone's coops and runs look SO nice! As soon as the weather gets better I'm going to do some cleaning and sprucing up of our coops.

My three Ameraucana chicks survived the night under their Silkie moms. This morning I went to check on them. Lucille the lavender had two, and Priscilla the porcelain had one baby. (I just now noticed the alliteration of the Silkies names and colors - that was not intentional!)

My little special needs baby has not been doing as well. She wasn't making it to eat or drink on her own. Since she was only scooting on her belly she just wasn't interested in food and water and I can't leave the water in her brooder because I'm afraid she'd drown. My band-aid keeping her legs together didn't help and I'm afraid it's because I put it on incorrectly.
I'm working all day and heading to Olympia this evening for rehearsal so am unable to give her water or exercise her every couple of hours so thank goodness for my girlfriend who accepted my request to be her nursemaid for the next day and a half. We re-taped her legs with co-hesive flexible bandage this morning and I just got a call from my gf who says she seems to be making more effort to get up on take a couple of steps on her own.

That poor baby though cries and cries unless we're holding her. She is so desperately longing for a mom. Last night I wrapped a hand warmer in a cloth to keep her company under her brooder lamp and she snuggled up next to it all night. When my gf asked what it was doing in the brooder this morning I said, "the washcloth is her little friend" and felt sad for her all over again. But I told my gf NOT to hold her all day - it's tough love time. She has to learn to stand on her own. I told her some PT was okay and one or two snuggles.

She'll have to learn to survive on her own. So

that she continues to improve. And I am grateful for being blessed with an extra special friend who is willing to watch out for her for the next 36 hours.

Those are some nice runs and coops but with all your space and the trouble you've had with predators, have you considered getting a dog? Our property adjoins several sq miles of Simpson timberland and we have nightly coyote serenades, reports of bear in the neighborhood, coons, eagles, lots of stray dogs. Nothing comes into our fenced area and the chickens have been free range with no predator trouble at all for 2 years now. We lost a few early on to the dog but he's good now. All we have to worry about is keeping the dogs (not the GSD, but the corgies) out of the chicken feed, and providing nesting and shelter from the elements.

We have a dog. He was a puppy when the cougars got in but still gave the alert so we knew they were there. When the raccoons attacked, the rooster woke the dog who woke us. I am wondering about getting a much bigger dog next.

Ditto- I took welding in high school to get out of Home-Ec. (I could not fathom what, praytell, I could learn doing "group" baking, when I'd been cooking for a family of 7 by myself since I was about 10 years old.)

RainMom
You and I must have gone to the same high school cause I took welding in HS too

I remember I welded (arc) two pieces of steal together. the bead looked so nice ! I called the teacher over for a look. He said nice job

I let the steal cool then picked up one piece, the other piece stayed on the table
