Welcome to our thread. Hold on to your hat we can move pretty fast. But don't stress about reading every word, just jump in when it looks right. Hope you find some friends soon for you little serama since they do better with buddies.

So... Now that the chicks are outside I am worrying about temps... They are pretty much draft free, with a 120watt red/heat lamp 2' off the ground... Chicks range in age from 3.5-7weeks.....

I have a 250 watt but reason told me that was overkill.... Was I right? Should I swap out bulbs???

......on another note.... If I agree to growthe RIR roo out, then process, how young can I do that and not have it be a waste? Kiddo and I are in negotiations now, but he keeps changing his mind.... My plan b was to just give the chick back... It's a $3 I'm willing to eat ;-)

If you have them in a group, they'll cuddle up and be fine. I have a thermometer in my little coop and it reads about 51 at night which is about 9 degrees warmer than the outside temp. My lamp is only 90 watts and about the same height off the ground as yours. My littles are using their perch and it's about 12" off the floor. If you put a perch in there they can jump up and get warmer if they feel like it. Keep it to one side and they can move closer or stay further away to suit themselves.

I think, from what others have written, that the cuddling is the key to being warm enough. Since I'm down to only 2 littles there's not a lot to cuddle with, thus I use the light.

Carolyn thanks for the response! I had a whole response to post back, but it got deleted somehow.... Now I am totally pooped and ready to go to bed ;-)

I wanted to post the pictures but for some reason my phone refuses to upload them... Lol.... So it's off to bed for me... See you guys in the morning :-D

Where are you? I'm pretty sure I have some paper cartons at home I was about to chuck into the recycle bin. My BIL and SIL saved them for me thinking I'd need them. Won't be home for a week though. I have been reusing the plastic cartons I got from FlyRobinFly. My neighbors and friends have been good about giving them back to me and I just wash and reuse them. I think I've only lost 2 in the process of giving out eggs.

I'm up in Snohomish. I appreciate the offer! I'm going to advise them that if they'd like more eggs, they just have to provide a carton for them. They should learn quickly enough.

I have my brooder in the non insulated shed. 250W lamp is 36" above them. It is about 50 degrees there under the lamp, all the chick are 2-2.5 weeks(3 Silkies and 5 Cornish X). No one has been peeping about being cold. Even this morning it is 38 outside and about 45 in the shed and under lamp is 50. They were only screaming at me because the meaties think they are starving to death if they go 5 minutes without food in the feed trough(I do FF so they get daily fill-up in the morning before I head to bed)

Since the Red is a dual purpose it should have enough weight to process between 16-20 weeks.
