Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Slinglings:

It sounds very much like it is "stress", plain and simple, but not simple to deal with. Do watch it. These things can go from minor to major in days. Meds probably won't help, unless he has some other issues that can be treated medically. The fact that they sometimes disappear is a good sign, it means he has found some way to cope with the issues given a bit of time.

I know it's distressing for a parent; just be there, be supportive, give him lots to do that builds his confidence. And good for you to "shout" about the bullying at school. There are some doctors that can help with this, though they are hard to find. I wish you luck, and best wishes to him.

My daughter has a minor tic that is only seen when she's under pressure at work, or some other stress. It goes when she has finally found a solution to the problem.

FWJ: because it's your birthday and I'm thinking of you, I bought myself a present to celebrate!

Well....what did you get for my birthday?? I was absolutely spoiled rotten by my loves today, and, well, DH clearly believes in birthday months because he's been getting me stuff for weeks ;)

Sounds like you really have a very special Himself. And kidlets too. :)

And, because you knit (it was you, yes?) I bought myself an overlock serger (I'm not a very good knitter) in order to make a brand new summer wardrobe. And overlock so that I can sew knitted stuff too! It arrives on Thursday.

Awesome!! I've always wanted a serger but really, in this busy time of life with littles, I know I wouldn't use it much. How exciting for you!! You neeeeed to put some pics of stuff you make once you're up and running!

Jess, my birthday gift to you is to find a 5K somewhere that isn't on a Sunday and force you to run it with me.

Gah! Forgot...I will look now.

Free incubator people, Bantam Brahmas make excellent broodies, so I definitely have some you can have! I'll even name one of the pullets 1202 for you Dave! LOL

I was just asking because the only one I've seen on Craigslist looks like the same one listed over and over again for $250 so didn't know what range to ask for around here.

I suspect my D'anvers is going to be doing broody duty before she's a year old, if she's at all like her mother (according to the woman I got her from). Is this a dark or light Brahma, just out of curiousity?

I can't ask this on facebook since my husband and now my son is on there ~ Has anyone dealt with facial tics or any other tics, either in themselves or their kids?  My son has always been a little..strange, in a charming way, but his tics are a little more weird lately, and he's starting middle school this year.  We are concerned about what is going to happen in middle school if he can't control it a little.  We are dealing with some jerk mean kids at his school right now, unrelated to his tics, but it doesn't help I'm sure. It's all very draining. He was elbowed in the face during a basketball game during recess last week and chipped a front tooth.  The tooth is fixed, and things are changing at school (thanks to one loud mother--ME!)   What can I do to help him with his tics though?  We took him to a doctor again today and basically he says, wait and see.  Watch him and see if it gets worse. Help him learn to relax and decrease anxiety.  Increase his physical activity (I started swimming lessons this week for both kids again and we have already been walking greenlake once a week and encouraging him to ride his bike)  We are decreasing TV/video games, he already has no caffeine, I am getting him more active.  Considering hypnosis to help him relax.  His tics change over time, each will last a few months to a year and then just disappear, and be replaced by another.  Some are a little weird but tolerable, some are kind of creepy.  His most recent one has been scrunching his eyes over and over again while talking, sort of a furrowed brow look.  That has been going on for many months.  But this week he started doing this thing moving his mouth way over to his right.   Last year he had severe eye rolling, always to the top left.    Two years ago it was *constant* coughing.    It never ends.

I am bipolar and have general anxiety issues, but have gotten it under control in the last year and a half (I genuinely believe the chickens have helped!).  I don't want him to take 38 years to be happy :(

Hey Slinglings- I'm kinda the same way with my posts, sometimes it's just better here than FB...

I could give you a suggestion, but it's has been frowned upon by modern medicine (thoughts are changing however...) and BYC peeps wouldn't like my opinion.  It works very well for nervousness issues.....

You can send it to me by private message, I'm open to anything :)

Please do share, my son moves from one tiny tick to the next too! I HATE modern medicine...I bet I won't think what you have to say is weird at all!

You might not agree with it Jess ;)

Non-abused, it's a viable option, though not for us. John doesn't have anything near bad enough for me to consider that. But I'm not opposed. Hah! Surprised you! :p

They're Dark bantams. Just babies right now, and I'm just guessing. My Lights that I had years ago were very broody, but who knows with this line, didn't intend to get them so will probably just show them this fall and then sell them.

Edit: And yes D'anvers will sit like crazy.

Before I get more distracted by bantams, I have a technical question: how would y'all go about cutting an eight-foot piece of two-inch PVC pipe into two symetrical, flat, length-wise halves? I want to put skids on the kennel we put together yesterday, and my first impulse is "have somebody else do it, but that ould be WRONG and also would still need direction as to clamping it so it doesn't go all spiral on me (I've done this wrong before, you see). If you could find plain old symetrical U shaped plastic gutter anymore, I'd use that (although it's really too wide), but I haven't seen anything except the asymetrical stuff lately

Dragged the Shopvac up to the Wyandotte coop, and will go string the extension cord in another half-glass of water (there was a bunch of other stuff in the past four hours, including checking cows and checking feeders and putting the sheep and the Bd'A in their daytime positions and getting a 3X50 foot roll of 1" mesh chicken wire where I need it.).

So anyway: any brilliant ideas about cutting that pipe? I'll probably be using one of those quick-cut handsaws and I have four clamps I can use although there's an open question as to what I'll clamp it to.

IS MY HEN SICK?

I hate to sound like a broken record, but my favorite hen is acting odd again. Lethargic, slow moving, ignoring treats, sitting with her feathers all puffed out even though none of the others seem to mind the weather. She layed an egg 2 days ago. Yesterday she sat on the nest for a while but no egg, but I expected no egg based on her "schedule". But sitting on the nest was a little odd. She is 2 years old and has never been broody. Her weight seems fine. She has always had large areas of skin with no feathers, or nearly no feathers so I don't think it's feather plucking. She's never molted much, either. We clipped the feathers on one wing a year ago and they haven't been replaced yet.

She acted this way a few weeks ago, but went back to normal within two days. That time she had also produced one tissue paper egg the day before. I haven't seen one like that this time.

The feathers below her vent were matted with white matter which I thought was egg residue, but perhaps not. So I brought her inside today and stood her in a dishpan of warm water and washed her under carriage. Now I have her in a box covered by a laundry basket in the laundry room where it's fairly quiet and she can dry off. She hasn't made a peep in the past half hour.

I'm not panicking, but I'm very concerned since this is the second time. When she shows absolutely no interest in eating cantaloup guts or BOSS it's very odd. She just stood there and watched the others gobble it up. Yesterday she seemed fine.

Are there some preliminary or preventive actions I should be taking? If so, what? The only medications I have on hand are vetricyn, sevin powder, electrolyes powder, and eprinex that just arrived today.

If you have any educated ideas or suggestions I'd be awfully happy to hear them.

Thanks very much.

ETA: She's been in the house, quiet in the box for 2 hours and she hasn't pooped at all. I felt her crop and it's not big but it feels kind of hard. I'll go outside and catch my EE and see what hers feels like for comparison. Either way, if she's not pooping I'm guessing there's an issue. I'll update in a little while.

More information: She finally pooped, just after I wrote the last comment. So it was about 2.5 hours. Two poops even! Nothing unusual, the first had some urates, the second didn't. They are gooey but not all watery. She ate some greek yogurt and just a sip of water. Her crop doesn't feel much different than my EE -- firm.
Her comb is much warmer than my Barnevelder. The Barnie feels very neutral temp., neither warm nor cold. But my sick(?) hen's comb is a lot warmer, she has a single comb. What is a normal temp? Does being in the house make any difference?

I'll do the eprinex shortly. Will mites do all this???

Any more thoughts or idea?
