Some duck breeds produce more eggs (and larger) per year than chickens. I think they are easier to keep than chickens, and less prone to disease. IMHO. Some are really funny looking, and some (well all really) are great to eat except wild mud ducks. Himself said if he could only have one critter on our place, it would be ducks.
DUCKS are the BEST!!

They lay bigger and they lay more with less maintenance
and they don't attack you like an eagle on steroids...
like some evil chickens I know.

Blunt bills and webbed feet = friendly bird.

This does not include the duck wanabeees...aka muscovies.

Them birds are turduckens.

Looks like a turkey, roost like a chicken and swims like a duck.
Evil looking creatures from the dark ages. Creepy...

We went through that same decision-making process recently, too. I'll share what we discovered.

First, a couple issues back, "Chickens" magazine had an article on this very subject. I wonder if you could find it online. It discussed not only what breeds tend to do well with chickens, but also how to train your dog to behave well.

We specifically avoided sporting breeds and hounds, due to their hunting heritage. We ruled out terriers, well, because I don't like terriers. We settled on a herding breed, as they tend to have an inborn feeling of responsibility. I grew up with shelties, who were excellent caretakers for our flock of rabbits. After much conversation, our family settled on a cardigan Welsh corgi.

We got our girl 2 months ago just before she turned a year old. We intended to do everything right, introducing her to The Girls gradually, etc., but it didn't work out that way. Her 4th day in our house, my 5 year old let her into the yard when the chickens were free-ranging. We panicked, but unnecessarily. Maddie is a herding dog from her enormous ears down to the tip of her wagging tail, even with no training. She immediately went into herd behavior, circled the flock. Okay, so the birds were terrified, but she showed no aggression. Now I take her out when I want the chickens in the coop, and I say, "Herd the chickens, Maddie!" and she gets them all into the coop.

Considering neither she nor I have ANY herding experience, I find all this pretty amazing. This summer I'm signing us up for herding lessons, because it seems a shame to waste her talent.

Anyway, happy hunting! I love having a dog, and even though we did everything about 75% wrong, it has worked out well. Here's our Maddie-girl!

I Want a Corgi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ohhhh, I think I overdid it again today. Really wupped and draggin'. I get so mad at me, I get tired and don't accomplish that much.
Oh yeah, that thing about losing things. Went to the hardware store and they started their sale a day early and they had exactly what I was looking for. A torch to crisp up the scotch bloom prior to pulling it out. A standpipe with a hose hook up already installed. Anyway, when I got home, all I needed was the propane tank (the kind you use on a Bar B Q). Went to look for it. No good, could not find it. Looked and looked. #1 son came to my rescue and he looked and looked, then he went to the pole barn to look. No good. It was not there either. As he walked past a window, there it was, sitting in plain view under the window.
I swear I could faintly hear a robust belly laugh.

I know what you mean; I keep making plans as if I could do as much as I did when I was a mere child of forty, and then finding myself not getting finished.
Yikes, do you sit with a coffa cupey every morn, and try to write a list of things to do...and I do it, and sometimes I think I do it just to DELAY having to go do it!!!!!
