Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Here is the response from sending a message to the city of yelm site about raising back yard chickens. It's also very upsetting that a few complaints can change the laws so much. I suggest complaining about not being able to raise chickens.
The e-mail sent back to me was from animal control.
"The City has received complaints about citizens raising chickens for food. Our response has been that as an urban area only pet animals are allowed. See 6.08.010 of the YMC and 6.08.30 definitions for pet animal defined. Thanks

Gary"
Gather all the like minded folks you can, and start complaining. Seattle manages to let people have chickens. It's a matter of making rules that address the most common complaints rather than throwing out the baby with the bath water. Complain! Complain! Complain!

I pomised i'd post the response i got.  :(     I'm upset about what I was told.  I don't live in yelm and now I NEVER will because of it.   This just tells me where ever I move to do my research first so I can keep my chickens.

A few months ago I checked their laws and saw NOTHING about not owning chickens.   And pet only to me doesn't mean you can't own them but apparently that does.    I butcher my chickens but not here because I'm in the city of tacoma and I know people would complain.   I go to my moms to butcher roosters when they are large enough.    I can't own roosters though.

It just really sucks that they would make a law making it harder to have fresh healthy eggs to eat.   And chickens do so much good (eating bugs, fertilizer)     If I lived in yelm  I'd be organizing a protest.   If I lived closer to Yelm I'd help them protest.

You can raise backyard chickens in NYC, but not in Yelm- which is surrounded by commercial fryer and egg operations.

So, again,

GO GET THEM !!

Hurry ....

Once you get them home -- mommy will be overcome by cuteness and you will be forgiven!

Here's the post http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/grd/3739830861.html

Here's my problem: we will be gone for a week the first week in June in San Diego..... A friend of my moms is coming to stay with my dog at night but that's all she'll do. The only way I could have the chicks is if someone could take them for me while I'm gone! plus I don't have ANY supplies for them :((

Do they make a ton of noise when you butcher them?

I know it's wrong time of year to ask about stock for rare breeds, but I have a friend and customer that is looking for good quality LF Dorkings of any color and don't want to wait til next year for me to hatch from mine. Any local leads?

I really like RSLs - I should make some .. hmm.
Cute pic Carolyn! I really like my new RSL chick too! I had no cloe she would be white and red...but she is feathering in nicely, it's very pretty! I was sad waking up to no peepers in the house too, and I had to bundle up and go outside with their wet feed early...I miss having them inside, I just don't miss the smell!

Thanks Jess. They're really cute and it looks like Jelly Bean will have a fair amount of white which is what I was hoping for. She's a precocious little thing; I like her personality, so far.
You're right about the smell, I don't miss that. But I used sand in their pen and cleaned it often enough that the smell wasn't as bad as it could have been.

So cute!! She looks like she will be a beautiful hen!!
I miss waking up to the peeping too. I do NOT however miss the dust. I think that is worse than the smell.

Thanks, I think she'll be pretty too. I agree that the dust is the worst! But the good thing is I was *highly* motivated to do a DEEP spring cleaning!

Our house is sort of an "open" floor plan and the dust flew everywhere! I had the furniture covered with sheets and towels, so the upholstery was spared, but the rest..... Wow!

I have 2 plastic boxes for my ducklings, both lined with plastic shelf liners, then raised a quarter inch from the floor with left over jiffy peat pot liners.
One is for feeding and splashing, the other is for keeping warm and sleeping.
Keeping the feed station separate from the sleeping quarters keeps the smell and mess down at least by 90%.
I hose everything down before dinner time outside, liner and all.
A bottle of Fabreeze helps too. LOL
They eat in the kitchen under the watchful eyes of my dogs, and sleep and play in the man cave.
No sawdust, no sand, no dust. They eat every 2 hrs. Just like babies do. LOL
I am liking this setup.

Down side is I can't leave town.
Picture 1...they are sitting on a marble slab. keeping their fluffy butts warm. Picture 2...Feeding station. Ahhhh LIFE IS GOOD.

That sounds really clever! Love the photos. They look SO Sweet. Do they make much of a sound, I remember what I've heard in the feed stores when I've seen them!

Nope, I'm almost too impatient to wait til next year!

I'm kind of eyeballing Stromburgs show stock

and staring at Bertha to hurry up and start producing again for the year, maybe get one or two peeps from her..

Did you contact Duane Urch? His are supposed to be nice (that's where mine are from but only 8 weeks old), I tried to get this person to contact him but they didn't want 25. Those have gotta be nicer than hatchery....

NO, I haven't as I was #1 thinking it was a bit late in the year to be sure of any from him and #2 as I understand it, they get a bit of their stock from his farm.. but I'm still on the fence about going ahead and bothering him
