Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So, as I said, today was an excellent day, over all. For instance, I have eleven hens and pullets, and this is eleven eggs:

(G=Ginjur, the non blue egg laying EE, T is the younger Hamburgs, R is the older Hamburgs, A is the Australorp, and W is the BLRWs. And of course the teeny one is from the Barbu d'Anvers.)

Also, this young lady's next elder sibling was born on June 6, 2012:

So good, eh?
It always feels so great when they all start producing for us doesn't it?
That calf is the most beautiful color and a heifer to boot! It has angel wings or eyebrows on its forehead !

A little news flash for me. I have just been contacted about cutting out some fish for a local Native American tribe. Seems they want 7 to start ant these would be on display in some special location!!

I'm new, here, and just got bit by the chicken bug. I was all set to think about it for a longish while, since I'm about broke and all, but then a few chicken tractors came up on Freecycle.org. My wife went and got one, and I have spent the last week in modifications and repairs. So now I'm trying to learn all I can on the subject, like what kind of chickens to get and how best to feed and water them.

I'm about three minutes north of Kelso on I-5. I checked my CC&Rs when we moved in and it appears that we can have chickens but no rooster, which is perfectly fine with me. Not in the city limits, so that is no concern, either.

It's all my friend's fault. he has a few chickens and gave me a couple dozen huge brown eggs over a couple weeks, and got me thinking about it.

no better place to learn than from these Peeps! You should check out the show this weekend in Vancouver should be lots of cool birds to see.

Wow, gossipin' ganders, I tried, but I don't think I'm going to catch up today

BikerChicky - I bet you could order some inexpensive replacement pads form the company who made the trampoline. I do it all the time with baby swings and other stuff that is in good shape but just needs a new cushion or something. I was going to suggest using some sort of netting on the underside of the springs and jumpy-bouncy part. I'm not sure how functional it would be for jumpy-bouncing, but perhaps you can attach it to the frame so that it's easy to remove for jumpy-bounces? (I got on one of those not to long ago and almost peed my pants!!! Not fun, and I decided no more jumpy-bouncy

So...CISPA passed......ggggggggrrrrrrrreeeeeeeaaaaaaatttttt.....

I'm going to go out on a limb and break social etiquette and tell everyone about Ron Paul's new Institute for Peace and Prosperity (YAY!) He is an amazing man and has done so much to keep the Constitution upheld. He even has a home-schooling curriculum! I can't wait to learn more about it, I just love that guy!

I love Ru Paul! She-he is so funny !!

Happens every spring - we get a flock of new friends :)

Good evening Washingtonians!

Long time! It's been forever since I had a chance to come here. Last time I posted was at least six months ago I believe just as we were closing on our house.

How is everything!!? =D

I had no idea that having a house would be so much work. I had such high hopes for being able to get a coop up and running for the spring but the cold beat me to it and I wasn't able to finish prepping the yard. We had to cut down so many dead apple trees. I am just now starting to condense them all down into yard debris.

This might seem kinda odd but does anyone in the vicinity of Vancouver have experience building coops? I have been shopping around a lot and I really just am not comfortable dropping so much money on one of those boring factory made coops. Unfortunately my fiance and I haven't got the slightest clue where to even begin. I bought myself a whole book of coop plans a while back but all of the diagrams are so confusing to me.

I start a new job on April 30th at that new Total Wine & More that's gone up near the mall and I'm bound and determined to build myself a coop BEFORE I cave and get some cute little peepers. I'm not sure how much I trust any of the feed stores stock though, I'd really rather not get chickens from a company that's just in it for the money.

Also booked the chapel for our wedding in August.

It doesn't seem like any of our friends and family is willing or interested in checking up on chickens while we are gone on our honeymoon so it looks like they may even have to wait until after August, or next year. :( I'm not sure if september is too late to get chicks.

Whew! Sorry for the long post! I missed being here and I'm still chomping at the bit to jump on the bandwagon!

Hey !

There is a poultry show near you saturday - I will be there along with several of the regular posters here. I've been known to build coops for folks. We could at least chat about it and see if you guys think you could build your own (I know you can coops are not difficult)

Watch the craigslist in your area for coops or old sheds - even some kiddie playhouses make good coops if you are just looking for a few hens.

This is her elder sister- she was such a late calf that she spent the winter here, and was only weaned in February.

Well they found on property not far from me. WSP bomb squad transported to a rock pit to destroy. While I didn't get to see it I am pretty sure that I built the bomb transport trailer they would have used.
wow I bet that was quite a boom.
Today I met up with Chickielady and Einstein which is always a pleasure.
She brought me my new babies. They are really, really cute. Safely ensconced in their brooder with a heat lamp, food and water. Little piglets. They gorged themselves.
I went out about an hour ago for some entertainment but nooooooooooooo, they wer all spread out laying there motionless. I would have thought the worse except for their snoring. LOL

Quite a busy day for the little ones. Removed from their hatch enviroment, put in a box and then transported to another place, jostled, handled, put back in the box and then into a different veh for a long trip home and then into a strange, large space. Once they found food and water at their new home they were happy little gluttons.

I'll post some pics soon, as there is little change from the ones posted by CL.
13 little, soft, bundle of fuzz. Oh yeah, gonna be fun.
I see a coop expansion in the near future

you have Alectrophobia my sister has it too! since she found a sick hen dead on the nest

I'm a duck girl now. Thought raising ducks would cure me...but nope.

It just fed and addiction.

I'm especially afeared of black shiney wet chickens...the kinds with the sharp and pointy beaks.
lau.gif

I think I saw one too many chicken slaughters every weekend at the market as a wee little girl.
That explains the "wet dead chicken fear" best.
hide.gif

If I google one more BALUT and I would fear baby ducks too.
