Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Whoa, I was warned how unfriendly it was around here for people that enjoy real standard bred chickens but I had no idea it was this bad.
Some people are completely happy with the hatchery birds tehy have.
Some folks do not give a hoot about the APA SOP, they just want a friendly, colorful bird that makes them breakfast.
Not everyone in the world is driven to follow the SOP.
And it certainly is not nice to label other's hatchery birds as "Garbage".

As for "standard bred" chickens..................I myself have seen hundreds of ""Breeder's Birds""" that do not stand up well to the APA SOP either, and in fact have seen quite a few ""Hatchery Garbage birds" have alot better SOP type than the breeder's birds.

Your birds are only what you want them to be.
The important thing is that we all get along, and respect each other.
In the infamous words of THUMPER:

If you ain't got nothing nice to say, don't say nothing at all.

No. I had assumed that since this was a chicken forum we were here for the betterment and enjoyment of chickens. I was never trying to be unfriendly, just chatting about chickens.

And yes I did assume that the majority of the chicken population on a chicken forum would be purebred, just like if I'm on a dog forum I assume the majority of them are not mixed breed. Because it has been my experience when you stick with something for a while and are serious about it that's what happens.

Oh well, too bad people took offense on something that was not meant to be offensive and I even said that to try and move on. Happy hatching to all it tis the season.

Hi guys !
Been busy & still feeling yucky but I get to go to the doc tomorrow afternoon.....hooray (NOT)

Grandma's bearded iris bloomed, gorgeous purple & yellow...and then the rain & wind knocked them over.......

I will have to stake the blooms, or find a drier place to plant them.

Got all my darrow Blueberries dug up & moved...some were barely in the dirt due to chicken rotovating.........I think all 10 will survive (I hope)

Anyone here ever hear of deer or possums/raccons eating winter squash vines or fruit ????????
Vines are very stickery...I ask cuz I am planning on planted the Sweet Meats & Long Island Cheese winter squash out behind the house instead of in the garden.............they take up so much room.

OK I guess back to work................

You need to go to Bird Bid forum in that case.
I will send you a link.
There is also professional bird forums per breed, such as the Onagadori forum.
But BYC is just that, Backyard chickens...and not much more.
Some have SOP birds, some do not.

BGMatt - Forums are a place where people come to learn, ask questions and get to know. The things I am an expert in - I do not go to forums for them. What was that little saying about assuming...?

Nodoby really likes people who act all uppity, make ya look like a douche, if ya know what I mean. I took little offense and had a good laugh! And happy hatchings with yours as well!

OK, status re incubator: I went to bed last night telling Franklin he needed to close the kitchen window: he didn't do it. When I got up, the kitchen was at 64F, the floor was like ice... oh, yeah, and he'd let the dogs out and not latched the back door, and it was open, too.

The center interior of the empty incubator was at 99.1F via the marked up thermometer that came with it; the edge next to the fan cord notch was 96.4. SO: not loading eggs near that notch, but otherwise it looks OK.

I read the Little Giant threads here, including the Dry Hatching technique one, and am also taking to heart my cousin's experience: he drowned the first setting of chicken eggs from ebay. SO: limited water (the incubator is down by the orchids and the humidity is higher than in the rest of the house, anyway) and run with one vent open until lockdown.

I think I'm asking for an Octagon for Christmas.

ALSO: assuming that hatching eggs follow the laws of physics and the law of inverse squares applies (the smaller the object, the greater the ratio of surface area to mass, therefore the greater radient heat loss), I'm putting the bantam eggs at the center of the incubator, where the temperatures are more stable.

It's a learning experience, life is.

I would just like to share an image of mine regarding hatchery birds. Half of these were won by hatchery birds and the other half by 'pure bred' birds. I didn't take offense to the statement, but I just wanted to share my experiences with hatchery and pure bred birds. These were open shows and youth shows.

Happy hatching y'all!

I'm gone for like 12 hours and I miss chicken wars!? Poor bgmatt. You may not have intended to come off like an a hole but unfortunately that's what happened. As for warnings you got saying this group wasn't welcoming I call b.s.. I'm new to this group and everyone has been great!
To the rest of the group.....
GET UM! LOL.
I hope everyone has a great day! ( yes that includes you too Matt) I'm off to try and get the siding on our new coop in this wind storm. Wish me luck!

yes, I lost most of this hatch due to either too much humidity or my early hatcher that played football with all the eggs. So I made a holder with an old egg carton with the bottoms cut out to hold the eggs next time and lower the humidity. I downed the poor things. So upsetting to open and see how my ignorance affected the babies.

So sore. Ow! Just had a recorded phone Intereview with insurance. The lady said I have $10K in medical, I can get some massages to help feel better. We are now off to school co op for a while and then home for some real school after that. Bummer about the rain today. Here's a pic of the box of the box, with dimensions for now. I will post a pic later of the contents of mine to show how much it fits in real life, this is all I can do feeling sore and having rain out there.
