Well yes, most people would gladly return a bird for a refund if it turned out to be not what thy wanted and had come from a good home and was healthy. In this case the home was filthy and disgusting, nothing any animal should be forced to live in (or children for that matter). So considering the deplorable conditions the bird would have to go back to if I returned him it was in the best interest of the animal to stay with me and actually be cared for and given a chance at a happy, healthy life free of abuse & neglect. Everyone I know and Most people, with a conscience, that found an animal as ill as this guy was/is in their care would GLADLY choose the safety and well being of the animal over money.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, they are sweet girls and have the best temperaments. Wyandottes are definitely my favorite breed :). The goslings are hilarious to watch run around the yard, such dorky little things!

It's been real nice lately so I finally got the chicken yard "turned over" after winter it was kinda hard on the top but the girls had a blast eating all the seeds that had started sprouting and the hundreds of worms that were in the dirt too

. Got some cute pics of the goslings too!

Oh Bleenie that little goosie is so cute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What kind and please tell me you are getting 'it' a friend...goosies are "herd critters" and need others of their own kind...so cute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dang, that is so cute !!!

I am in my forties and in all the years I have raised animals I have never had to deal with animal control. I have had to report child abuse as a mandatory reporter, though, so hopefully animal control is just as thorough as CPS in investigating cases of abuse and neglect. The pictures and description of your rooster are most definitely cause for concern and I do hope animal control does a thorough investigation into why he is in such a pathetic condition. I am shocked anyone would pay $20 for a bird that looks like he is dying and if the seller was to blame I am sure the buyer would jump at the offer of a refund. I do hope he pulls through and lives to see better days.
It is absolutely disgusting the condition that bird was in !
I can see why bleenie kept the bird, to save it, rather than return it only to have it die !

OK, so in the last 3 days, we got hordes of road gravel in..our road is LONG: and around the various coops, and got ALL the new compost in the garden beds, and planted the tomatoes IN the garden (out of the hot frames) and covered the hoop houses.....................................
and then the weather turned COLD out here & my knee is swollen & killing me !
Weird huh ?
It is true, what the old people say about the weather changing makes their joints ACHE like the dickens...and I wish I knew why ????????????????????
Low pressure ?
High pressure ?
For weeks I am NORMAL and working hard out doors...then what happens ???
WHAT ???
What (is it the weather ?) can be so intense as to render me almost crippled ?
Weird !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
crimany !

Hey Carolyn...are you having issues with these super tiny mites ?
Let me know !

Another thing I do, is:

Get a tub of Manteca (lard) at your grocer
Get a bottle of NEEM oil at the landscape place of your choice (Home Depot or?)
Get all the lard out of the tub into a double boiler
DOUBLE BOILER
heat slowly til it is all melted & dump in a few Tablespoons of neem oil...
I always add a Tablespoon of tea tree also:

That is Melalueca.................... we have bought at Aquarium stores.

Cut off the heat & dump the mix back into the original tub, LABEL and rub by hand on all roosts.
This lotion is excellent for conditioning of feet, and inpars nits & louse or mites from traveling down roosts.

So we are off early to go visit Mom & Dad and show them the baby ducks...Mom has always loved baby ducks and she no longer gets around well anymore.
Then we meet TC who is picking up duckles, and Margaret's friend who is getting eggs...and we are after a nice 6 chair glass top patio set w/umbrella if anyone knows where a nice set is at for a good price ?

Later chookies !

Hello all! This is my first post on BYC after months of lurking. I just got my first chicks a couple days ago here in the Olympia/Tumwater area. I have two Buff Orpingtons and a Barred Plymouth Rock chick, all females. They're all 15 days old. I absolutely adore them but my 3 year old son is the chick whisperer.. He reads and sings to them at bedtime and is so gentle with them (petting only, not ready to hold them yet). We're building a small coop this weekend and this site has been super helpful in planning and designing it. I'll be sure to share pictures when it's finished! For now, here are a couple photos even though I know you've all seen a million chicks before :) this is so exciting for me! Looking forward to chatting with everyone here and I know I'll continue getting great information from this site.
