The babies are fine - the issue is with my 4 year old hens ( 3 of the 4). I actually thought they had worms ( weight loss, runny poop, lethargy, not laying ) so I took a fecal sample to the vet and there was no sign of worms but he said the cocci load was very high. No respiratory or other symptoms of disease.
I will use your method for the young ones once they go outside. Their coop and run is separate but I am sure it is in the environment. This is the first time I have had an issue with anything other than an internal layer. My vet thinks the really wet winter and spring may be causing an increase

If I had a hen die, and did a necropsy :
YES she would have COCCI bacteria in her. BUTT it would not bother her as she has built up immunal systems to deal with it.
