Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi CL,
The babies are fine - the issue is with my 4 year old hens ( 3 of the 4). I actually thought they had worms ( weight loss, runny poop, lethargy, not laying ) so I took a fecal sample to the vet and there was no sign of worms but he said the cocci load was very high. No respiratory or other symptoms of disease.

I will use your method for the young ones once they go outside. Their coop and run is separate but I am sure it is in the environment. This is the first time I have had an issue with anything other than an internal layer. My vet thinks the really wet winter and spring may be causing an increase

...Just remember what I say here:

If I had a hen die, and did a necropsy :

YES she would have COCCI bacteria in her. BUTT it would not bother her as she has built up immunal systems to deal with it.
OK ?
Do you understand ?

Hmmm, maybe.
I have not noticed it happening here.
Hope it all works out for you !

I live In Carnation....great local towns are Duvall, Carnation or Fall City
Thank you! We went and checked it out! What we are looking for is a small house or mother-in law apartment, trailer, or otherwise small residence with a yard for my immaculate show bantams.
We are quiet and have no indoor pets. A garage or outbuilding would be a plus, but not necessary. thank you for all your help BYC people!

I'm in Snohomish and LOVE it! We like to describe ourselves as off the grid in the middle of a city. We've got a little bit of land and when we are at home we feel like we are out in the country. But we are only 10-15 minutes to a down town city with shops. Maybe 30 minutes (give or take depending on traffic) from Bellevue from my place.
that's not bad at all! Do you think Everett area is too far for commute?

From Bellevue, i would take some time driving in each direction at rush hour to get a better feel how far that may be…..I would try any promising direction several times as traffic is inconsistant. Then i would start looking…..I usually work in the Seattle area but live north between Marysville and Arlington. During rush hour it can take 55 minutes or so far up to 2 hours……I would also check out the closest feed stores and other important places like a decent grocery and hardware distance…..eliz

yeah that might work. We are used to a half to one hour commute for work already.

Good news - no worms
Bad news - large load of cocci - started Corid tonight

You know you can also get a sack of Medicated chick feed, and feed it to all your birds for a week ON & then a week OFF, which allows their immunal systems to get used to, identify & "Blueprint" the cocci.
Just always remember to not give Corrid (Amprolium) in their water AND Medicated feed (Amprolium) at the same time, or you will overmedicate & I hear this can kill birds.

Some people find it easier to fill up the feeder rather than mixing Corrid in the water.
I do 1/2 tsp per gallon of the Corrid powder.
I have alot of milk jugs out here, most are labled cuz 1 coop gets something different than the other.
Hope this helps.

And also remember:
Cocci will always be in their gut & in the dirt.
The idea is, they have to build immunity to it & live with it.
But finding cocci in the gut on fecal exam is normal.
Building immunity to it is the idea.

Think it is going to rain today ?
We must have gotten 2" already today....insane.
Well overflowed 700 gallons in the 1 water tank...wow, better got take more showers, flush more & do some laundry...I hate it when the water tanks overflow, seems such a waste....................oh well.

Everett to Bellevue is at least 30 minutes. Probably closer to an hour + with rush hour traffic. Everett is more of a down-town city - most of the houses I've seen there/people I know who have lived there don't have a yard big enough for more than two or three chickens. You might be better off in a suburb in Lynnwood or with more land in like Snohomish, Woodinville, Duvall, Carnation, etc... You should probably look at city ordinances for # of chickens allowed. Could be a deciding factor for you. =]

Took me an hour yesterday to get from Bothell on 405 to downtown Everett - really a very day-to-day kind of commute. 30 minutes of that was just trying to go the 2 exits on 405 to I-5 north :( Glad I gave up that commute several years ago and now only have to do it a few times a year :)
