Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

MamaManda, the pics of your girls are great! What are you using to capture your shots?
I especially love the one of your DD with the two girls(one right-side-up and one upside-down.) So precious!

Thanks Broodytood. :) Those were taken with my Canon 50D, but I now shoot with a 7D. I have pictures of my other 14 birds on my computer that I've been meaning to add - but that page is getting so looooong!

Your avatar reminds me of when I was a kid, growing up in Texas. My parents bought us our first chicks for Easter when I was about 7 - they were all different colors like that. I didn't know they still did that!

We have never tried it but have heard of people who have, and it works.

They do still dye chicks and I have seen dyed silkies as well. Not sure if it is healthy for the bird or not. ;)
That particular avatar was chosen because of my fighting breast cancer 2 yrs ago. Might be time for a change since my scan came back clean.

So, how long have you been in WA? How are you enduring the grey, rainy weather?
I came up from CA and it took me 20 yrs to get use to the weather.

Hello All ! I live in North Bellingham. I have a duck question for those WA Peeps who have ducks... I have chickens and nice coops BUT we just got 4 ducks a few weeks back. They are almost 4 wks old. I am trying to figure out the best type of house to put them in. I see some people have 3 closed sides and 1 open . or all closed with LOTS of ventilation. I just want to make sure they are safe and will be warm if we get snow like we did this last winter.
THANKS

My ducks were given a duck house, but they didn't like it. In the winter, they have access to the coop, but prefer to sit in the yard and get covered in snow. It's funny to watch them get up and shake the snow off the next morning.

GETTING RID OF CROWS

This isn't easy, we had them, eating our eggs or hauling them off. I've heard that partially blowing eggs and filling them with mustard (or other nasty stuff) will put them off. Good Luck.

I may try the mustard thing. I left some rotton eggs out for them thinking that would deter them but they must have liked them. I am wondering if they would go for mole bait if I put it in the front yard or if there is a way to add poison to an egg with a syringe. I would like to kill the predators and there is no law against it like eagles. I am not sure it would be a good idea to fire a gun in a residential area so I can't just shoot them even though I would like to. I doubt they would go into a trap either.

Traps are always fun things to play with.

I'm also from California - Lived in LA for 10 years, and SF for 4. I've only been in WA for 3 years. I've heard from some people that it takes about 3 winters to get used to the rain....but I knew it would take me longer. This winter was the hardest so far. My husband took me to Florida to get some much needed sun. Hopefully I'll get used to it before 20 years!
