Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

The Spangled Russian OrloffX Ameracauna made some awesome babies !
Spangled Ameracaunas !

One part of Ameracaunas I dislike is their lack of coloration, with most as 1 solid colored (cept for the Wheaten, Blue wheaten)
Add a Russian Orloff in there & you would be surprised by the colors !

Hi there, yeah, i kinda think the same with my Black Ameracaunas and Faverolles…Their pretty but blaaaa…Reds are eye catching like the Buckeye in your pic and especially the Crele I have Mahogany Faverolles which are not colored like the Buckeye….They are colored like the rooster in your last pic and the girls are a dilute mahogany. real standouts.

I do fodder on a small scale. Maybe there's a buildup of something the flies can use as a food source such as mold or decay? or maybe they find it to be a good place to lay eggs? Are you using a weak bleach solution some days? What grain are you using? Do you have really good air circulation? If not you might want to add a fan.
I think it might be the circulation. I'm adding some vents to the plastic. No fan as yet. It's outdoors, so I'm hoping the extra ventilation will do the trick. Thanks!

Maybe buying some plastic window screen and make frames or a cover to go over the shelving…could have a door that velcros shut????
The plastic zips close on the unit, but there's a gap at the very bottom. I think it may be the smell of the seeds fermenting that the flies like, even if they can't get to them. I have them uncovered for today. We'll see how it goes.

Hey, everyone! I live in Walla Walla County, WA, and I have a small backyard flock for 4-H projects, as well as rabbits and hamsters!

Just a question - does anyone know of anyone in SE WA or NE OR that sells show-quality Silkies? I would like some for next year's 4-H project. :)

You might want to check with a fella that goes by the name FlyingMonkeyPoop. Crazy name, nice guy. Or Pips&peeps. Try a private msg and maybe one of them can point you in the right direction.

Tamara seems to have made an art of it, she has at least 10 I think!
I grow my best taters by volunteer, LOL
From tater peelings in the compost, they root all winter in the warm compost pile, then we cart new compost to top dress in spring, and viola !
Taters the size of softballs, and all from peelings !

In fact when I actually plant seed taters, drenched all proper-like in rooting anti fungal dust as I am supposed to do, they do not grow worth a dang.

Does anyone else here have a fodder system? I have a homemade one using a cheap 4-tier greenhouse from Walmart and some plastic trays from the dollar store that I burned holes into. I keep it on my back patio, and it works beautifully...except, there's a swarm of flies in the thing day and night. I have lids on the plastic trays now, but the flies still swarm inside the greenhouse. And if there's any standing water on top of the tray lids, they drown. Every morning I spray off dozens of dead flies and still there are dozens more. I'm going to put a fly catcher on the inside soon.

Sounds like the flies are thirsty

Marjorie Best (OR) you can contact her through Washington feather Fanciers (web site) I know of no one in E WA. (added: I think she is in Central western or North western OR, not eastern, but I'd have to go check my books)

*****Yes she is in Oregon City******
