Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Phew! Everyone did ok last night! I'm taking it harder than they are--nervous chick momma! lol

They've been getting some supervised free-range time each day and now they are out running around unsupervised. Figured I needed to cut the apron strings.
I've just had more time with these guys because my dog had TTA knee surgery so I'm home and able to give these chicks more attention/hovering! Weirdly, it's made me more nervous though! Probably just channeling my anxiety and nervous energy about my dog into caring for the chicks!

I prefer more yolk, or even better, just yolk! My lil bantam Cochin eggs seem to be more yolk and I Love them because of it! Hubby prefers the whites.

I'm going to have to raise my prices! Right now I'm not getting any green eggs, but I expect some very soon. I've only been charging $3 per dozen, but with the price of feed increasing in leaps and bounds it only makes sense to pass the cost on to the consumer.

I charge $4/dozen (for eating eggs- not hatching eggs!) and always sell out. Unfortunately, as you said, feed prices have increased though which is a bummer. I tried fermenting but they ate that faster than regular crumbles. :( I want to find a way to ferment without having to spend a ton of $$ on ingredients.

Anyone have any special solutions to fermenting feed that doesn't cost an arm and a leg or is that a unrealistic wish, lol?

Christmas tree farm is closed! Woo Hoo!

We had the coops over by the tree farm office so people could see the bunny, chickens, guineas, and turkeys. I was not prepared for some of the questions/comments that people would have about my birds!

The eggs are blue(or green)! Do you put food coloring in their water? Yes. Next time I'm having them lay all green and red for Christmas.

Can a chicken be parted out? I only want a leg. They were trying to get me to take a leg off a live chicken! NOOO! Get away from my birds! They aren't cars!

Can I buy that chicken? (Pointing at one of my best daily olive egg layers) I told the lady $30 if she absolutely had to have her. Then she asked if she could butcher it here. Uh no. I thought she wanted a layer! Needless to say I did NOT sell her my chicken.

What's wrong with your turkeys? Why are they white? Well they're royal palms. So their feathers are black and white. There was a whole conversation about how turkeys are only brown.... I gave up. His logic was so confusing I finally just looked at DH and said he's right they must be albinos... Even though they have black feathers!

There were MANY others like someone asked how my Wyandot lost its comb and why does that chicken have and extra toe (spur) and my favorite.... "How can you eat fertilized eggs?!?? I would never eat a baby chicken!"

So glad the tree farm is closed. Next year I'm putting up info signs like at the zoo.... Maybe that'll take out a few of the interesting ones...

Ahahahaha

I was getting 40 pound bags of feed for $10 or $11. Now a 50 pound bag is $17. That is quite a jump in price. I'm not really sure if it is a winter time thing, or if they are blaming it on something else.

This spring I'm going to start selling hatching eggs. You can definitely bring in more that way than selling eggs for eating.
