Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Me neither.

If all the birds that survive it are killed how are they supposed to become resistant?
What is happening, is we are being invaded by a particularly nasty strain of Avian Influenza, from China (go figure !)

We have Avian Influenza here,(H7N7) and it is a non-morphing variety, and quite a few do survive.

But the strain from China is so nasty, and morphs so often, that it is said that it is impossible for a bird's immunal system to build up immunity to it, and also impossible for Science to develope a vaccine against it, as the China strain morphs constantly.

Qualities I am looking for:
low tendency to be broody
not total jerks
decent egg production
I'd love a EE or something similar
Funny feathery stuff like feathers on legs or muffs.
QUIET. This is the biggest priority. If we get a hen that is really noisy, she either gets rehomed or eaten. We are in a relatively quiet neighborhood of smallish 1/4 acre lots and don't want to be "that" neighbor.

So far a few breeds that I think I might want are:
australorp
barred rock
cochin
ameraucana
EE
OE

EXCELLENT choices !
LF Cochins are fun, extremely funny running !
They are medium to poor layers though.....and if you have muddy clay like we have here, the feathered shanks, toes & nether regions will get dingle balls of clay that only grow with time....and harden in dry weather to make an almost 'clacking' noise when the birds run.....sounds hysterical (and it was!) but I had to clip all their feathers off shanks, toes & most of their under pants...LOL

Yes chickielady I have a pop door in front but they are locked in. I'm hoping they will know where home is when I let them out for the first time. The plan is for a 20 by 14 run plus under the coop, and free range when we are home.

I will definitely post a few times looking for chickens. I'm still trying to put together a list of breeds I want. I'd actually love some suggestions.

Are you looking for chicks or hens? Cochins do tend to be broody, although they are very pretty.

I will have some chicks available soon.
Australorp x EE - they will lay green eggs. Super friendly, quiet, and they are my best layers
Ameraucana mixed with legbar - will lay blue eggs, extremely quiet.
Faverolles - lay tan eggs and have feathered legs and a beard.

I was hoping to get some young hens. I did the duckling thing last year and never got the benefit of eggs! I'd love green and blue eggs though... I guess my biggest concern is not fussing with chicks this year. Any 3-6 month old hens you're interested in parting with?

My chicks will be 17 weeks this Sunday and my daughter told me that we might start getting eggs soon. So, tonight I put my fake egg in the nesting box and told my girls that this was where I expected to see them put their eggs. I'm going to get a couple of golf balls and place with my fake egg in hopes this will encourage them. Can't wait for my first egg.
