Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

BTW @Chickielady
is it possible to actually be drinking to much kombucha? That stuff is addictive. I've finally been able to split off of a scoby for a 5th jar.

So far, I have 3-1/2 gallon jars and 2-1 gallon jars going 24/7............which has given me about 15-12oz (second ferment) bottles a week.
Of these, I have been giving them to my Dad, once a week I take him at least 12 bottles.
Soooooooo
I myself have not had much.
But, since I spent yesterday getting 3 CT scans, 1 of which with contrast dye (OMG the radiation !) I figure I better drink at least a half gallon of it today to clean the gunk out of my bod.

Dad can buy his at Costco now.

I've got 5 half gallon jars now. I really like the stuff and staying out of it is hard. Im drinking about a quart a day. My hubby doesn't care for it. Mom was interested until she learned bow it was made. She's got an issue with most cultured stuff. Tells me to not tell her how to make yogurt so she can still eat it.

Quote: Some of my girls are evil and attack me when broody. They also work in groups of evil to protect the chicks. The very best broodies I've ever had were EEs and Ameraucana. Especially that ameraucana, but she's people friendly and a snuggler (which she initiates). I gave her chicks then took out more a week later and offered them carefully in full daylight so see reaction. Most hens will attack. She reached out and started stuffing them under her. I just wish the big birds went broody more. The most reliable is the EE that goes two times a year.

My Ameraucana is being a great mother too. The only other hen she allows close is the oldest of the flock, the Barnevelder. It would be interesting to see if she would accept more chicks like yours, but not this time around. She's also a very friendly girl. She has a habit of coming over and tapping on my shoe, or my shin when she thinks she's not getting her fair share of the treats. And she did it again the other day with chicks in tow -- but not for treats -- for chick feed! She gets very aggitated when I pick up one of her chicks. She jumps up in the air, fluffs out all her feathers, clucks like crazy, all the theatrics. If I lean over and show her that the chick in my hand is safe, she starts pecking the chick and my hand. But she's never pecked hard, which I think is really interesting. Obviously they CAN peck hard, but she doesn't... thank goodness. I think she's a keeper.

The best broody I have is an EE also...and she is smallish, and viscious ! If anyone comes close to her babies they are in for it !
It is almost comical.
She has never pecked me, but sure makes all the noise & fluffs up....she is broody in between lays a few eggs & is back at broody again, clearly she is not meant to be an egg layer, but just wants to brood.
Taking her chicks from her when they are 3-4 mo old did not bother her at all.
Not at all !
But instead this hen went right back to being broody, ready for her next batch of eggs.
I keep her for that reason alone !

I made the mistake of taking a jar w/scoby, over to show my parents.
Myself, and my sister have been telling Mom & dad the benefits of Kombacha, and they had never seen a scoby.
WOW is all Mom could say.
She would not touch it & got the creeps just looking at it !
My sister has a property in bend, OR & travels there often.
She says there is a restaurant there that has kombacha on tap !
The "factory" that makes their kombacha has a 6 foot wide scoby, in a vat, that is 6" thick...six feet wide by 6 inches thick !
That is one HUGE scoby !
Sis says they do tours there, so she intends to go see this scoby & take pics if possible cuz I want to see too !

I've been thinking... I know there are some claimed benefits of adding apple cider vinegar to chicken water. Any idea of adding a little kombucha to the water would do the same trick?

I am not positive, but pretty sure, most berries, especially blueberries, love acid.
Wood ash, especially hard wood ash, is alkaline to the point of sweetening your soils a lot & may irritate the berries.
To make soap:
First save hard wood ashes, and then you leach water through the ash which creats lye.
The lye is mixed with lard (in a pot) and was then cast in trays, cooled & cut into soap bars.
Weird, huh ?
So make sure the berries you are using the ash with, really are not acid lovers.

Agreed, blueberries, strawberries, rhododendron, and azaleas all love acid and iron too. But the cane berries and roses dig the potassium in the, especially hard wood, ash. We get 8 to 10 ft tall raspberry canes and berries up to the diameter of quarters.

Our two best broodies are speckled sussex. They've each done two batches, neither one liked the dog or ducks near. Poor dog.

Yikes! Are you sure that's not the one in the movie "The Blob"??
I've never seen one, but I might be with your mom on this!
