Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

THIS IS NOT MY PROPERTY; but I'd like to help these people provide a better run for their flock. Pic was taken this afternoon. As suggested, would road base be the first step?
Actually either would work, and pea gravel is much easier to shovel, if you get a truck load of it, it shovels right into a wheel barrel...road base is 3 or 5 sided (so it nests & interlocks and provides a stable road base.) and road base is heavy !
Mounding the rock is possible with road base, no so with pea gravel, which will level out after a while.
If the rock is mounded, rain would run off, but you still must wash it off after a while it is full of poo.....I use a strong wash of water from the hose...an odd hobby of mine : washing poo...

If the poo builds up, after a while it can become so acidic that it will cause burns to the bird's feet...we see foot rot like this with pigs, also...they were not meant to constantly be standing in their own feces.
The neighbors here have 4 large hogs in a very small pen, in MUCK up to their bellies...contantly.
It is sad, and not a good idea for humans to eat these poor critters either.
They probably have quite a bad staph infection(s) going on in their feet.................

Pigs hate their own poo.....and do not care for mud either, unless it is hot weather, and CLEAN poo-free mud.

OK, I have 2 6 mo old pullets (Bielefelders) who are acting punky...so I am suspecting egg bound...here we go with new layers....darn it all !

I have set up the hatching bator for the egg set, it did not hurt as much as I thought it would !

Dug out the thermometers, the hygrometer...tied a new sock on it...washed the bator out, fresh rain water..... plugged it in....
And it did not hurt a bit !

And this morning it was still right on perfect !
An omen ?

So I am going to go get the eggs & set them this afternoon....
And I guess I had better go check out the pullets....those Biels lay some huge eggs, and they could be impacted, darn it !

Thanks Chickielady, do appreciate all the info. None of us want wet, mucky feet/bodies. Land slopes away from where I'm standing in photo, so going to suggest they take advantage of that too.

great idea ! It is nice that you are helping them !
Sometimes it's hard to suggest to people that they may want to do something else to improve their animal/bird's health & hopefully they do not get offended.
My neighbors here have never raised pigs, and they have their chickens standing in mud worse than the photos you posted !
They only go see their animals when they want eggs, never clean the runs, coop or pig sty....they also are very offended if anyone suggests they improve any of it, as if they know it all.
I would not be surprised if they get sick from eating their pigs...EWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!
