Does anyone use an automatic coop door and have recommendations or advice... Please? Thanks!

I have a Chuxaway that we installed about 18 months ago. It has worked flawlessly and I'm very happy with it. I chose it because I wanted one that worked on batteries and I liked that the controller doesn't have to be right by the door. It works on 3 AAA batteries. I changed the batteries at the beginning of each winter so I wouldn't have to go out and change them in the rain and cold. They were still working fine each time I changed them. I have my controller outside of the coop and run, so if I want to manually open or close the door, I don't have to go into the run. I also didn't want one that worked on a light sensor because I have motion detector lights in my yard and I certainly didn't want the door opening at night when there was movement around the coop that turned the lights on! When I bought my door opener, it had to be shipped from England, so that was a disadvantage, although shipping was pretty quick and I had great communication with the company through email. It seems to be a small family run business. http://www.chuxaway.com/

Good luck and post pictures! What are you hatching?
This batch is both Sulmtalers (Gold duckwing & silver duckwing) and Lavender Orps.....wish I had some good SQ Buff Orps..................

We should not have any real issue...we do have a generator, but I hate going out in a hurricane to turn it on & plug it in !!!

Thanks so much Carolei! That's exactly what I am looking for! I've been scouring the whole internet but never came upon this one. Do you remember approximately how long shipping took?

I just had to look up sulmtalers because I had never heard of them before. They look pretty cool! Can't wait to see your baby chickies then.

I think it was about 10 days. They have a Buy it Now listing on ebay, so you can see the cost in dollars and the approximate shipping time. I bought it through ebay and paid with paypal, if I'm remembering correctly.

For @justdishy
and anyone else wanting more insight on drainage and how sand and gravel hold water there's a BYC post here (post #10) that has some very specific information from a hydrogeologic perspective.

justdishy I get sand from Lone Rock near Kingston.  I like the one they call C33, and we ended up driving out to the pit to get it because when they bring it into the lot it gets mixed with finer sand for mixing concrete and we never got there at the right time.

Thanks for pointing me to that post @CarolynF. But I thought Lone Rock was in Seabeck? Had also heard of a supplier on Newberry Hill. Will call around this weekend and see what can be found.

I guess I will just jump in here and introduce myself. I've been on BYC for a couple weeks and was just referred to this thread. I'm in Clark County. Grew up raising horses, we always had a few chickens and a few other animals roaming around 5 acres. I live in town now (although not in city limits) with my husband and 2 kids, we have 1/4 acre. I will be getting my first flock (of my adult life anyway) in February.
