Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Anyone between or near Battle Ground down WA to Portland OR needing "spent grain". I'm planning to pick up 50lbs per week. This is more then our little flock can use... I will be more than happy to share for free. Message me if you are interested.

Penny - this forum help keeps me awake while working :0)

Gosh -- fertile eggs are so costly! That is the main reason why we like to keep our rooster... coming close to first reason is because our daughters named and played with all our chickens everyday.... :( would hate to have to let him go.
Mail order chicks are expensive, too.

After minimum order size and shipping, woes. Hoping one of the Old English Bantams will be broody (eventually) and we can try hatching some. Mixed reviews on whether they make good mothers, though. Silkies and cochins seem to be the champions, I think? But they look rather high maintenance.

Sammamish actually allows roosters (or at least doesn't forbid them specifically), but I fear the ire of our hundred-feet away neighbors.

I am having Mother's Day chicks hatching today. The first of the chicks is not at all what I expected, though. It has white down and white skin! I was expecting chipmunk looking chicks.

These are the odd shaped dirty eggs I got from hatchery Ameraucana hens under a hatchery Ameraucana rooster. This woman has other breeds of chickens but she claimed in the listing that she only has the (hatchery) Ameraucana rooster so only the blue eggs are "pure" bred while the rest are a barnyard mix.

How could I have gotten a mix breed chick from her hatchery Ameraucanas? The only thing I can figure is she has another rooster she was unaware was running with the hens. I hope I get something I can keep out of these eggs. I don't want a barnyard mix.

We went to Hood Canal for acouple of days and the water front home we rented, the cleaning lady daughter left us a dozen eggs from their home. Those eggs were super yummy and what we noticed right away was the yolk was a deeper orange.

Any advance on what to feed our chickens to get a deep orange yolk? I was kidding with my wife, maybe we should let them drink carrot juice.....

I get very deep yellow orange yolks feeding dunmoor crumble, cabbage, beans, lettuce...
anything to old at the store they give me in greens not sure but refrain from beets or beet greens

Yes we are neighbors! You have an impressive list of animal friends. My husband used to raise chicks commercially. Now he's retired and then brought home an incubator. So I got busy and began to study the subject. Wow! When those chickies began to hatch my enthusium went sky high. I was so glad that my neighbor wanted some more chickens. I'll be busy for awhile.:):):thumbsup
