Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Speckled sussex look so pretty!

This is a little odd, but are there any farms or butcher shops nearby that offer dressed heritage or other breeds? I want to try them vs. the commercial Cornish grocery meats. Been checking farmer's markets and craiglist, but I guess meat regulations are (rightfully) much tighter than egg ones.

Well, if you can do it your self or know somebody who can always buy roosters and raise them to eat. I just really really really really really really really really hope that these are female.

Yes, they do kind of look like the Jubilee ones. I can't wait to see what they look like when they get older. This should add some more color to my flock.

A woman went to the mortuary to say goodbye to her husband lying in his casket but was concerned about his bald head. She spoke to the mortician and explained that her husband was rather vain and wouldn't like to be seen without his toupee, even in death. "I will take care of it" said the mortician, "just give me a few minutes." She returned later and was pleased to see her husband's toupee very nicely in place." "What do I owe you?" she asked. "Oh, it was no big deal," said the mortician. "But I insist," she said, "I must pay you." "Oh, OK then, just give me a quarter for the nail," he said.

I will either get two or three total tomorrow. I don't want to try to integrate a single chick. I don't want to try to integrate a single chick. Somebody said the marans from hatcheries, feed stores, don't really laid dark brown eggs. Does anybody have any experience with this?

I think if you want the deep dark brown laying Marans you will need to find a breeder. I hatched out Black Copper Marans a few years back but I did not keep any. They were the French ones with leg feathers out of a top line so the eggs were nice but I don't need dark brown eggs because they were impossible to candle during incubation.

When our Australian Spotted hen left the nest with 7 ducklings she left behind two eggs. They were sitting cold for hours but we put them in the hatching incubator just in case they were still alive. Both hatched today so we might try giving them to the hen tomorrow if she will take them.

I haven't been around for a while, though, I will drop by and just skim through the thread. I've been busy over at my daughter's house painting and painting and painting. She and her husband found out that he had to either relocate with his job or look for a new one. So, they are moving. They are one of the few that got to keep their jobs with the massive Intel layoff.

Since we moved here to be close to them and the grandkids, that means that we will also be moving. So, in about 3 months, I will be saying "good-bye" to all you Washington Peeps and saying "hello" to the Hillsboro, Oregon Peeps. But until then, I will continue to check in on what's happening around the state of Washington.

I've seen them advertised on craigslist from time to time..
One farm in Ellensburg was selling at 7.50 a pound.. that seems high to me..

if you know where you can take them to process or able to do it.. you can find young roosters free on craigslist. . That might a cheaper option.

It is true - the hatchery Marans do not lay dark eggs. They are the same color as a plymouth rock or australorp.

I will have some blue copper marans hatching next month, and may have some hatching eggs available after that. The hens lay dark brown speckled eggs and the rooster is also from a dark egg (he is from CCL lines).

Moran's will have to go on my next chicken bucket list. The coop is full now.
