Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

This evening, while I was checking on a broody hen's hatching progress, I heard the Coast Guard helicopter passing back and forth. That means only one thing here, a missing person in the ocean. When it was time for cooping up, the helicopter was silent, but the air was filled with ambulance sirens. Tonight, a family lost a child to the ocean. Every year, it's the same. Every year, when I hear the helicopters, I pray "Not another one, God. Not another one."
Please be careful when you visit the coast. The waters along our state are treacherous, even when they look calm and still. These waters kill. Watch you kids, don't go out past your ankles, and never turn your back for a second. Because a second is all it takes.

Growing up in Astoria I always hated hearing the Helicopters, my dad used to be a fisherman/Captain, the bar is treacherous.

It's not just the bar that is dangerous. The beaches take lives, too. The undertows and rip currents make even wading in the waves a dangerous thing to do. There are signs all over town warning people not to go in the water. The signs are in the hotels, in the gift shops, in the grocery, at the gas stations, all over the place. But people still don't heed the warning. They let their kids go play in the waves thinking nothing bad could ever touch their lives. But it only takes a second. One blink of an eye. And they are gone. And it happens every year...

Not sure what happened but wife called and said one of our baby chick (2 weeks old) have a broken leg.  Unable to bend it right leg and sitting on the ground.  Hopping along with left leg :(.  She moved it in a box inside our garage for recovery.

Should we try to take care of it on the road of recovery or end the pain?  :( I rather not see the poor thing suffer.. but at the same time like to give it a chance to recover.

Check to see if it is actually broken or if the tendon has slipped. Both can be corrected with paper tape but the wrap is going to be different depending on what it is.

We know people who have drowned by thinking water is safe and not understanding how an undertow can end their life. I have seen TV shows and movies showing people on the bank of a huge river and deciding to cross, then of course the actors have safety ropes if they go in the water at all and they can't possibly swim across without ending up a mile downriver but the scene picks up on the other side as if it were actually possible to cross safely. People have no idea what is real when what they see on TV looks real enough to fool their brains into taking risks.

Of course, I know that ;) I grew up there, my whole childhood and part of my adulthood, lost classmates, friends, and relatives to the ocean. It's dangerous, any water is but the ocean more so. I was just pointing out that since my dad worked on the water I was always fearful of the helicopter sounds.

These new chicks seem so flighty compared to the others I've had. They freak out and stay that way. Any suggestions? I am extremely busy right now and trying to get a couple things done on a deadline so I can't spend a ton of time holding them. But I do try to hold them each for a few minutes each day.

They will get better as you have more time for them. Every time you see them, give them a small treat even if they do not take it from your hand. They will soon associate you with goodies.

These are just babies, 1 to 2 weeks old. They are fast, they are small, and they are flighty. When I say flighty I mean they're easily startled and don't calm down easily.
