Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My hubs got home before I did and went to chat with them. He was much more kind than I would have been about it. He told them that if he sees the dog of leash and around that he will take care of it himself.

Did the neighbors offer any restitution for the damage caused by their dog? I would think at the least they would replace your property and then try to make up for the emotional loss in some way. If you have nasty neighbors then there is not much you can do to get them to accept responsibility for the actions of their dog unless you have proof that it was their dog. Our neighbor let his dog wander in our front yard all the time, peeing on our bushes and leaving piles but we put up with it for years before contacting animal control. Once they were given a warning they were more careful and now the dog has died so we don't have a problem with the dog anymore but the neighbors are still nasty. It is the hardest part about sharing a property line, you have no control over who lives next door and what stress they might add to your life.

Yes we can legally shoot the dog if its on our property. I am more angry at the owner for being irresponsible. We live in a small community just outside of town, so shooting anything wouldn't be a good idea.
I don't know what the laws are where you live but here you can legally shoot a dog that is attacking your chickens. On your property. It's sad because the dog is being a dog and hasn't been taught any better by the people. But as much as I love dogs I would not let one kill my chickens if I could help it. Can you put up a very strong electric fence? One that will zap the crap out of that dog?

No they didn't offer anything. We could've called the sheriff (no animal control where we live). Hubs had to pick up feathers and carcass from our porch into their backyard so wouldn't have been hard to prove what happened. The woman wouldn't come to the door when we first went over. They are just irresponsible. The saddest part is the lack of remorse. To me, my chickens are pets. Like cats or dogs for other people. I would feel terrible if my dog were to harm anyone else's pet. And would definitely offer some sort of restitution.

The problem is with the owner not the dog... shoot the owner not the dog use to be
and I think still is approved to to shoot or defend your livestock by whatever means..
I am very, very defending of any dogs bad behavior is caused by the human

I realize that. However you can't just let it keep happening. Call the sheriff, put up a strong electric fence, get a BB gun and scare it away. Or the next time it's on your property take it away. Take it to the pound. My dad had a dog that would try to kill the neighbors chickens. He couldn't keep it confined, so he gave it to somebody who owns a ranch of over 10,000 acres. The dog is happy as a clam now. No chickens to bother.

I know just my humble opinion

Melkuda,
Filing a report with the sheriff dept gets it on record which you need to do. I sent photos with mine. The sheriff will contact them and while they will tell you there's nothing they can do unless you actually see/saw that it was their dog they will warn them of the consequences if it gets caught. If the dog is not first killed for killing on your property they will declare it a dangerous dog with all the same consequences as attacking a human.

She is very right you do need to contact the sheriff about as they choose to
hide from it

Sorry to hear about the neighbors dog. I had a similar occurrence with a pair of spaniels in California that took out 3 of my flock by knocking out a board in my 6'tall privacy fence. They never admitted that it was their dog, and I ended up reinforcing the wooden fence, and keeping the girls locked in 6' chain link run when I wasn't home. I've had to add hot wire and cinder block all the way around the perimeter now that I'm back in WA due to local predators.

Positive SITREP from my little homestead: my broody officially hatched 9 chicks. Barred rock roo over an EE/maran, so super mutts. Lol. My pullet with the broken leg was re-splinted today and moved out of the garage into a small ark in the main run today so she can still hang out with the flock and hopefully will assimilate back in easier in a couple weeks! She has been pretty tolerant of all the handling, but she pooped on hubby today...

Ok I will do that. Is it too late now since it was a few days ago? I don't have any pictures unfortunately.

Congrats on your hatch! I have a momma white rock sitting on a clutch of 6 right now. Fingers crossed.
