Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Not around here. You will get fined for 'unintentional' feeding of the bear. They have the opinion that the bear was just being a bear, and you, as the human, did something to draw the bear in. They assume that the bear would not come up to the house unless there was a 'food' reason. You can't leave food out for your outside cat or dog either. That's considered baiting. You're not allowed to have wild bird feeders or keep your trash can outside. The problem is, not everybody has a garage or shed to store their trash can, they have no choice but to have it out. And the trash company refuses to provide 'bear-proof' cans, because that would mean the drivers doing the pick ups would actually have to do more than sit in the truck and push a button.
Bears have pulled down fencing to get to trash. They will pull apart a shed to get to trash. The woods are full of berries this time of year, but they just sit, ignored by the bears. They are trash eaters around here. And nothing is being done.

Was reading up on this law:
RCW 77.15.245 http://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=77.15.245
Case against: Doris Berryhill Parks http://tdn.com/news/local/friendly-...cle_eacc6868-ee99-11e3-aa94-0019bb2963f4.html

From the point of view of Baiting / people being irresponsible: I didn't see a time frame on when you can leave your feed outside (or in a run). There should be a time frame when you can leave feed outside and within that time frame it is not consider baiting, since it is ok to have livestock and livestock has to be feed outside. There is no way to contain feeder odor.

Our chicken wakes up around 4am and head inside at 9pm... I would like to see the fine print on when it is ok to have feed outside. If feed is never allow outside, then there will be a interesting change in the law.

Around here, the Fish and Game officers don't make a distinction between livestock feed and birdseed or pet food or trash cans. It's all considered 'unintentional' feeding of the bears. And the reason is because there are people around here who intentionally leave food out for the bears. Those people feel like the bears have been pushed out of their habitat and they feel the need to 'help' the bears by feeding them. Fish and Game have to be really strict with their interpretation because of those individuals.

are there close neighbors having the same issues, chickens or feed problems ?
maybe call Olympia head of fish and game or email them ?
nuisance bears by state law protecting livestock should supersede and fish and game
I beleive.

Thankyou, Speckled Sussex, Blue Wyandotte, have no idea what the third one is. Looks like my older Welsummer but a lot bigger
Ahhhh got it, couldn't quite see the Rose comb if I had I would have had a better guess but I still would have been wrong! I always think of Wyandottes in only Silver and Gold laced birds, I forgot there was BBS variety.

The brown one looks bigger than I would have expected a young Light Brown Leghorn, but the white ear lobes make me think that is what it is. You are right, it looks a lot like a Welsummer but I think those have red earlobes?

Somebody needs to be injured before they set traps. Once traped, they euthanize. Happened two years ago, just a few houses down. Lady let her dog out to pee, and the bear was right on her porch. Bit her, and killed the dog.

SOMEBODY...................as in a human ?

I have not heard of that !
Seems unlikely that anyone of us could be "injured" (not killed) by a bear !
Once that close, it is like getting hit by a semi truck...not likely going to be just an "injury" !
be careful & do the SSS method like we do !

hahahahahaha.another one.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she heard that on the construction site across the road there was a guy laying bricks and she thought to herself, "This I've got to see."

Yep. She was bit in the side. Fish and Game had multiple reports about that bear's dangerous behavior, but it wasn't until the woman was bit letting her dog out to pee that they came out and did something. The attitude they have is, the people are the problem, not the bears. The one that was in my run yesterday, came back last night and tore apart my composter to get at the chicken poo, straw, and grass clippings. Seriously. That's all that was in the composter. Not food, in any way. And it still tore the thing apart. This bear is one step away from breaking down doors.
