Check out sq foot gardening and companion planting. Planting certain things near each other can either be a help or a hinderance. Like beets and pole beans do not do well near each other, but bush beans are fine to plant near beets. Broccoli and strawberries do not go together. Kale needs to be kept away from pole beans and strawberries. Radishes can help deter cucumber beetles and are more tender when grown near lettuce. Basil makes tomatoes taste better. You also have to keep in mind the type of weather each crop needs. You won't be growing everything all at once. Peas, kale, lettuce, and broccoli are all cool weather crops. Summer heat will kill them or make them bolt, so those are the ones you need to plant first. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers need warm weather to thrive, so don't start those too early. Radishes, beets, carrots, and beans can be grown in either cool weather or hot weather.
