I locked the dogs in the chicken pen for half an hour and left them. I was hoping they'd get some rodents. Much to Athena's disappointment, she didn't get to kill any. Zeus ate a bunch of chicken food, which is the only danger of leaving them with the birds.

I have good dogs

Lost one of my black Isbar chicks last night:hitdidnt see anything wrong with it other than it was a long trip from Florida. Penny I just got a couple of heating pads from Walmart they aren't very big 12"x15" do you just lay one in the brooder? and it has 3 settings low, med and high do you use low setting?
When using the heating pad method, it's best to have the pad draped over some sort of frame. I use a piece of wire fencing. Sturdy enough for chicks to play on top of, but flexible enough to easily adjust as they grow. I use a puppy pad on top to keep poop off the pad. Chicks need to be able to make contact with the pad to warm themselves. Start with the highest setting and watch the chicks. If they aren't spending any time under or sitting on top of it more than they are under it, it's too warm.
