I am going to try cross breeding the Barnevelder with the super white silver sulmtaler & see if the pattern will transfer...I love playing with color. The B has yellow skin, and the S has white skin & is crested, so its a gambel as to which color skin or if a crest will transfer...maybe I can ask a few experts.
But I still think it is a gambel.I have never heard one color of skin being dominent over another, has anyone heard ? I know combs are....and egg color can be determined and passed on by the Male parent of the offspring pullet daughters.............

Yeah, since I sold all my beilefelders and marans, we have far less eggs per day, but I am strongly looking into getting a new breed for that empty coop.....maybe....or just cross breeding new colors

You are a true BYC-er Penny, and its a good thing we do not live closer or I'd be over there eating ALOT ! can't have gluten, but you are always cooking something yummy !

If I remember correctly, yellow is recessive and white is dominant in skin color. Silver being passed to what sex depends on which parent is what. Can make silver/gold sex links since the gene is on the sex chromosome so females only receive their single copy from their father. Combs and egg color are mixed. Not on sex chromosome. Though so many different genes cause brown one might be there as well. All will have little crests as it's incomplete dominant. Can use a Punnett square for crests. White feather color depends on if they are dominant or recessive white. If recessive all will be colored and carry a hidden copy of white. If dominant, all will be leaky white.

Careful selection and back crossing to desired breed can fix the issues. Just takes some planning.



I'm half tempted to breed my mock isabel silkie pullets to the black cockerels this spring. All the offspring will be leaky black carrying one copy of lavender. Careful crossing would give me a few lavender silkies in the next generation.

Yes I tend to agree with you on exactly what you said as far as the skin & silver.both are considered Silver.The Sulmatelrs are 2 gens away from Silver Wheaten, so some do have a 'blush' of gold on chest or so...Males are B&W in both breeds, but the Sulmtaler Cockerels have the gold on the wing......so we'll see.....in any event, we'll have more eggs is the way I see it...

They will be 23 weeks this Sunday. So end of January. The lightening days will also encourage them

so they may lay anytime after 23 weeks then I misunderstood great my one egg customer is so excited to get banty eggs from me
