Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

IMG_6259.jpeg

So its been a good month now since I got my Muscovys. They mainly hung around the duck house and my back door. All settled in. Play in the kiddie pool, lounge in the sun. No matter what I did I couldn't get them to walk down the little hill 100 feet to this 1/4 acre creek fed pond on my property. I tried everything. I cut a big hole in the fence, layered the hill so their little feet and legs wouldn't have to jump. Everything.

Well I finally coaxed them down. Bread bits. couple feet at a time.

Let me tell you. It was magical. They never imagined anything could exist like this. I think Carol was crying. Then after a thorough exploration of the bank little Beth started swimming. Their little heads and necks bobbing with the rhythm. Not far, they stayed pretty close to the shore and me.

Now for those of you that have Muscovys you will understand this. They put on their happy face and were talking to me. Daryl was doing his raspy haha thing, the girls were cooing, even the chickens came over to see this. A joyous early spring day on a wild pond.

After about a hour they trotted back up the hill. I expect now that they know it is there.....they will return! I don't think I will need bread bits anymore.

So I moved some chickens around to free up a breeding pen for the French Black Copper Marans. I have the five girls in there own pen now do you guys know how long I should have the rooster in there for good fertility? I haven’t put him in with them yet I don’t want him to tear them up as there are only the five hens but want there to be good fertility by the end of the month.
