Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I stay away from Vaseline bc its water based. This berts bees is wax and very oily thick. I just can tell its painful. Went to town and am refreshed, so back to doing what I can and being grateful for what I have. Old man winter I raise a fist at u and shake it. Thankx penny

Preparation H has a pain reliever in it, works great for injuries and immflammation. I also use bactine, and have Shea butter & Cocoa butter, and as far as water based, for cocks comb, I use bag balm mixed with preparation H. If the frosbite is bad, and alot of black shows up, you may need to debride with some small scissors carefully, and apply more Prep H and /or Bactine, also has an analgesic in it too. Love Bactine. So applying bactine or prep H AND bag balm is good.

What river are you close to there @rosemarythyme that really is awful ... would you like us to rescue your birds or ?

It's just a creek, obviously doesn't usually look (or move) like this and people can safely walk through it most of the year.

If push comes to shove we can rig up something for the chickens in the garage. Past that, we'll all need snorkels...

This is our river today. Normally that is an island across the way, in very low water it's a peninsula. Now it's under water. Our little dock has been pulled up for the winter, and asx you can see we are on the high bank so no flooding worries. However, the landing at the bottom of the stairway is underwater. I'm sure some of the folks closer to town are flooded. I haven't been out there to see.

I do not have cool pictures to show which I say is good thing ... We have tons of mud lot's of wet dog towels I need a new air force dryer Edemco is a good name in them thank you Amazon have one on the way use to have all of that

So much rain, and no relief in sight. I'm starting to freak out as the creek floods higher and higher. Water has reached the house's foundation now on the side closest to creek and reaching back maybe 20' and septic system is overloaded. Chicken run is completely underwater along with the rest of the lawn - chickens are currently locked in the coop. Sigh.....

It's seriously a lot worse than last time (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/yay-flooding.1342945/). At least the chickens could go out last time. I had to lock them in today, the current is quite strong, about 4" deep outside the run and 2" inside the run.

holy crap

New to chickens, not new to WA. I grew up in eastern WA, left for about 20 years (lived in CO for a few, then western WA), I'm glad to be back in eastern WA.
I now have my late father's property, and am working on setting up for chickens, and possibly miniature donkeys down the road as well.
I have Belgian Malinois, and will be setting up a variety of training/sport venues for them as well.

Hi Heather! Welcome to the Washington State thread! I'm rather unfamiliar with the weather patterns of NE WA.

Here in the SW WA rain is the issue. I have found solid wooden coops are necessary. I bought a prefab a couple years ago just to use as a segregation coop and run. Two years in and that one is ready for the burn pile. The other 3 coops I have were built by my DH and are holding up great. But, we are building a new one next month. All of mine are hutch style, and I do love the convenience of easy setup for see, no touch, situations. I have that right now with 2 cockerels who each need their own coop and run. Now I want a large walk in coop. With all the rain, and the shorter days of winter, the chickens spend a lot of time inside and I am cleaning coops out nearly every day, in the rain. Having a large coop with poop boards will make my job so much easier. It will be big enough to use for segregation too.

I have a fairly safe free range area in my small orchard. The new coop will have a totally secure good sized run attached with solid roof. Outdoor space that is dry is essential. I have that now in a sort of temporary fashion.

I'm not sure if you are dealing with as much rain in the Spokane area. You may have more snow and colder temps. Hopefully someone in your area will join in the discussion here.
