Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Please leave the dirt floor I use like 3 bags of white shavings
but they do dirt baths in their when it rains and it rains .. only coop that has a floor is silkie I hate it but for them it is good
I think I'll try not having a 'floor', but if it doesn't work, I'm probably going to put all of that concrete to good use in the coop. Thanks so much!

Washingtonians, what are your coop/runs' floors made of, and what do you use as litter? Let me know! Thanks.

Forgot if I weighed in on your other thread (or actually I think I'm thinking of someone else), but:

I use deep litter because I get a lot of rain and my run is unroofed, so it helps stabilize the soil and provides drainage. I harvest wood chips off from tree branches, along with dried leaves, dried grass, garden and weed trimmings. I used to have a massive mud problem to the point that the thick mud was pulling the boots off my feet. Now there's no mud or bad odor even after lots of rain.

These chicks have no issue walking on the run floor after a heavy night of rain. The grass outside had large puddles, but not in the run.

Thank you! I think you did comment on my post. I love this idea so much! Ugh, why did I buy concrete haha. I'm going to post in the thread that I started with more questions.

Silkies have little coops for sleeping and laying. Otherwise they are out in their runs. 7 small birds for a 10 x 10 run. I have to clean them out regularly.

Large fowl have a deep litter type on dirt floor. I just toss shavings in occasionally. There are worms living in there. I come across them when removing litter for the garden. Poop doesn't last more than a couple days before it's broken down. It's basically a compost in place.

I'd kill for a cement coop floor. Keep all the digging pests out.

The runs all have straw down right now. I'd really like hog fuel instead.

Zip ties are worth their weight in gold I have tied wire so much my fingers bleed

We own safety wire pliers since we're both ex-Navy aviation and hubby still works in aviation. Those twist wire up nice and evenly as well as fast.

Actually we have quite a few of his older, almost worn out, tools laying around. Mom wanted to steal the cannon plug pliers because the jaws are soft and good for removing things you don't want damaged at all.

Zip ties work so well for everything though. And so easy.

I save the baling twine off the straw as well. It gets reused here. Back when baling wire was used, we always had some around. If not we could go grab some out of the old baler that grandma used for hay.

Thank you for your opinion! I am deciding what type of flooring and bedding to put in my coop right now. You can weigh in if you want! ->https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/revamping-the-coop.1435532/
