Good Morning All. Please let me introduce myself. My name is Justin and I am new to the chicken life. We have 6 3-4 week old pullets/chicks. I have been weaning them off the heat lamp but when is an appropriate time and temp to release them to the coop? Out on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Hi Justin! Welcome to the thread! I’ve not had young ones this time of year but someone will probably be along soon who has.

My first ever chicks were a March-delivery purchase (10 years ago) and they lived in my laundry room until late June because I hadn't finished the coop until then! This time around, I ordered chicks from the April 26 hatch at Meyer Hatchery to give myself more time to remodel the whole chicken area. This time around, I don't think they'll last as long in the "tote style" brooders as I'll have 15 instead of 3, lol.

As far as your area, I have no idea, I'm in eastern Washington. But, I don't plan on my chicks going out until the overnight temps are at least above freezing most nights.

Welcome to the state thread once birds have feathers not fluff then they do not usually need heat by then.

They need to be fully feathered and then you need to lower the temp for them to let them adjust to cooler temps. Let them have slowly longer time outside each day to feel colder temps. Can't just dump them out in the cold.

Did anyone else watch the avian influenza webinar on Tuesday? They posted it on YouTube if you missed it. It is specific to Washington State. There are photos of necropsy and deceased birds, if that troubles you.

We had this go through a few years ago as well. Many people lost their flocks as the state comes in and destroys them.

Don't let your birds come into contact with wild birds, specifically waterfowl. It was wild ducks and geese spreading it.

Ugh, that's impossible on my property, as wild ducks live here about 10 months of the year.
