Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello, Washington poultry people! I started out with ducks as a “F the HOA the world is crazy and I do what I want,” project in 2020… and, well, things escalated quickly. 😂 We now have six ducks and 10 chickens. We are also actively looking for a small plot of land to buy and then slowly build a farm/retirement home on. And by slow… I mean, we are in our mid-thirties, so we are looking at the long game here. Anyway, it’s nice to meet you all, and I’d love to connect with other people in WA. If you have an IG, we are @LittleGreyFarm 🤍 -ash

Welcome to the group.

I refused to look at any place in an HOA no matter how much the realtor tried to convince us. Nothing good ever comes from more people being able to tell you what you can do with your own land.

We wanted a minimum of 5 acres as that way Pierce County had no real restrictions on what animals we had. Ended up with 18 and a small ancient house. Eventually we'll put up a new one. Don't dismiss properties that have marsh or ponds because that prevents neighbors from encroaching too close and subdivisions. We're listed as rural sensitive resource and wildlife corridor. Keeps out the rabble who want to pretend to be in the country but don't like country things like crowing roosters. We only mow maybe 3 acres. It would be 5 if keeping it all up wasn't so difficult. Blackberries and grass can outgrow me.

Haha yes… the mud! 🙃 We are, luckily, in unincorporated Pierce County and not the only family in our neighborhood with “livestock…” in fact, someone once walked their small herd of cattle through it! My neighbor and I were like… why does it smell like cow? Oh. Okay.

We back up to 10 acres that are private owned forest/wetland (different from the wetland buffer) I’ve attempted to contact the property owners a number of times to see if they’d consider selling. Otherwise, we will be looking around orting, eatonville, even as far as rainier and yelm, depending on what’s available.

Anyway, I hope you are all having a good day!
