Everyone seemed ok in my pens. No panting. They are shut inside because they stay cooler in there. Only got some courtyard time just before dusk.

Watered the courtyard and roof again and fresh cold well water.

The puppy likes to chase the line of water back and forth and play in it. I had to make use of his insticts again tonight at dusk. Silkies didn't want to go back in. He had them all rounded up and penned in less than a minute. Im encouraging and guiding him so eventually I'll have a full fledged chicken herding dog.

I had to put a fan in their coop tonight (there's a partition so they can't access it) because it was still 90 degrees in there when they put themselves in at 8:30pm! My big girls were definitely panting and wings hanging. Once the temp drops to 80 I'll go turn off/remove.

I do have two old cupcake pans they have mealworms in water frozen give a few to banty.. most will go to the big girls .. The tractor for the banty in the day time is now where it will be more in shade I gave give them four
then rest to the big girls.

My broody hatched 4 of 6 eggs that I put under her. She seems to be a good mom and is showing them how to scratch for food. So cute! First time for both of us.

Here's a question. The coop they are in is about 2-3 ft off the ground, with a ramp. Will the chicks be safe with mom showing them how to go down, or should I move them to my other coop, which is 6" off the ground. The big girls are laying in the lower coop, as mom chases any who try to get in her babies' space.

Also wondering, the dad is a Sapphire Gem, and so, what could the barnyard mixes turn out to be like? I think I have one roo, black with dots of yellow on its head. Breeds are ISA brown, Golden Comets, Welsummer, black sexlink, Sapphire Gem, and cream Legbar x black copper maran (brooder).

Technically they are barnyard but nothing wrong with that.
Will you keep the roo? could be nice looking bird?
Often times the dots on the head go away.

Not sure if roo will stay. Already have one, so could cause issues. I'm looking forward to what coloring they'll be.

That is the same way I have Smudge my rooster is a Blue Marans. I have like 4 marans hens rest of the 22 are just ee of mixes.

He's sure pretty. Found my cockerel dead this morning in one of the nesting boxes. He was acting normal yesterday. No sleep lost over him. He was ambushing almost everyone from behind, including a kid. Maybe he got kicked in the head or pinned one time too many. On a happy note, Xena hatched 4 chicks out, I think one is a male, so far. All barnyard

mixes with the Sapphire Gem rooster. Can't wait to see them feathered out. I even think one will be white!
