Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I got on my riding mower and cut about half of my lawn down to 3". The rest I'm going to let grow and get shaggy. I sowed white and red clover seeds in one section of my yard early this spring, in anticipation of getting my chicks. It's coming up nicely, and from what I hear chickens like clover.

Most of my yard is covered with wild daisies, and sprinkled with dandelions. Along with the wildflower and clover seeds I planted it should be a good attractor for pollinators. And an enjoyable environment for chickens.

Hen eating out of cup is my 12 year old. Other two are 2 and 3 year olds who run the flock. Old lady would not let them have any. They both got pecked. If she had a cane she'd have hit them with it.

Had some really great thunder storms overnight and into the morning. Last night there were awesome bolts of lightning shooting through the sky. Made me feel like I was back in Kansas!

I pulled the plastic cover over my tomatoes before it got dark. The soil has enough moisture in it and I didn't want rain soaking it anymore. And the next 4 or 5 days will be on the cool side, so I figured the cover would help keep them a little warmer.

After I finish my coffee (already had my eggs with parmesan and hot pepper flakes), I plan to work some more on the chicken run. It should be ready for the chicks by weekend's end. I hope.

I put my gravity feeder together today. Looking around the shop I found an old trash can I never used adn realized it was the perfect container to mount the feeders on. Took just a little while to train the little chickies to poke their heads into the deep, dark holes to get their food. Haha

That will be great to use can you close it off from rats and mice?
Yep. It has a lid but I just forgot to include it in the pic. On top of the lid I rigged up a 45 degree surface to keep the chickens from squatting on the top.

Each of the feeders included a press-in stopper that would keep rodents and little birds out too. It's inside the coop right now, but will go into the run when I get it finished.

I'm taking a break now, watching Ask This Old House, and This Old House. Been working on my run today.

A few days ago I closed the area underneath the coop with OSB. Today I did some framing between the coop and the shop wall, then closed it in with heavy duty, rabbit cage floor 1/2" x 1" welded wire. Nuttin's gettin' through that stuff! LOL

I'm going to try and get the area between the top of the coop and the metal roof rafters closed in with 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth.
