I have an EE broody that has no intention of not being broody, yet she has refused fertilized eggs (kicked them all out of the nest and then made a daring escape from the topless pen I made for the 2 broody hens I had. Now, she has refused chicks too! I snuck them under her, she immediately stood up, jumped from the nest box, and hid in a corner until she figured out how she was going to escape her second broody pen (with a top)! She bolted! I gave the 3 chicks to my White Cochin, Lovey. She has all 5 brand new Silkie babies and her single surviving chick that hatched on the 27th! She is a wonderful Momma hen and is keeping all 6 babies safe and talking to them non-stop.
Meanwhile "Lady Eggsalot" has gone back to a completely empty nest box again, still insisting she wants to be broody...she just doesn't want to lay an egg, sit on actual eggs, or have chicks appear under her. UGH! She has hated me from the start, even as a chick herself...she constantly yells at me, won't let me get close to her at all, and is downright a pain in my backside! She is so pretty though....so I put up with her and her freaking attitude!
Also, I have 5 new grey fluffy Silkies that were still a little damp on the tops of their heads when I picked them up last night! On the drive home, they were chirping so loud...I opened the little cardboard box and carefully cupped my hand in the corner. I then drove the roughly 15 minutes left of my drive leaning over to keep my hand in the box because all 5 babies had climbed into my hand (for warmth I'n sure). I'm in love...gosh I hope none are cockerels...Hubby won't let me keep any boys, he says if we did we would be "overrun with chickens by next spring"! He's probably not wrong...but if there is a cockerel in the bunch, I may have to talk him into letting me have a house Roo!
