Smokerbill
Crossing the Road
My chickens made a liar out of me. Yesterday evening, for the first time ever, one of my hens escaped from the day run and was foraging in the yard near the coop. It was late, so I decided to let the other five girls out to forage for grass and bugs till it was roosting time, 20 or 30 minutes total. They've been confined to their coop and two runs since spring of this year.
I'm pretty sure I found the day run escape route. I'll secure it before I let the girls back in. The hen that escaped was the one I'd expect to get out. She has a totally different personality than the others, seems more self-aware, and is much less satisfied with confinement. To her the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. And actually, she's right about that.
I cooked all those mushrooms I picked yesterday and froze them in 1 cup containers. I see steak and mushrooms in the future.
