I'm with you on no chicks in the house. I have a brooder set up in the coop. Works great.

What do you use to keep the chicks warm when they need it?

I have stay on heat pads and a heating table that is adjustable.
When they have feathers they can go in the second room of the now greenhouse.

We have a Sweeter Heater. They work perfectly. We keep one end very low, just about their height, and the other end about 5 or 6" above them, so they can choose where they want to be. Because we put ours out when they were 3 days old this time, we also added a black light, like they use in snake aquariums. It's ceramic, so no danger of breakage.

This is the ceramic heat lamp. I just put it in one of the tin fixtures they have at all the farm stores.

Wow, that Sweeter heater is pricey. I'll just rig up my old heating pad somehow. It's not one of the new ones that has the auto shutoff so it should work.

There is a post or thread on here somewhere about the Mama Heating Pad which discusses what you are thinking of doing.

I thought the ceramic bulb was pretty reasonable.

Brooder.

I always gave a handful to choose from. I usually hatch with an incubator, though.

If desperate, I have a broody coop within extension cord range and a brooder plate.

That's what I did for my 2nd and 3rd batches of chicks. All I paid for was a roll of Press n Seal to attach it to a frame (cobbled together from leftover wire mesh and a wire dish shelf).

4th batch got a new heating pad, otherwise same old set up.

I think I saw in one of your posts how you made it. That's kind of how I plan to put one together.

I just finished planting the last of my yellow onions, around 100 plants. If they all grow I'll end up with around 200 yellow onions and 75 shallots.

One of the potatoes I planted last October is poking out of the ground.

The chicks are all doing great. No poopy butts! I'm figuring out a way to set up a rabbit-cage brooder that will be in the secure chicken run outdoors. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned because I really dislike having chicks inside the house.

the first one is only good for like 6 max chicks, the panels ,, all the chicks want to stand next to it and dont stay warm enough.

amazon has a garden seed heating pads- 10X20 for $10's. I am thinking of getting 2

If I get chicks delivered in July I dont really need heat- If I have a Mamma hen i dont need heat-- but the week of June 2 is not warm here so I will get this.
