Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I thought chicks were pullets when they have their feathers, as in young hens that are not at the point of lay. :idunno

ETA: This trio was supposed to be "pullets" according to The Farm Store, but as you can see, at about 3 months, one was clearly different than the others. lol Meet Ralphie.

I like my coffee with a bit of half and half.
I am one that like my shot of sweet but not allot either.
About to finish my second cup.
I am exhausted I overslept again.
Take care of yourself along the way here. You are doing a lot of nursing, which is nice of you, but can be very exhausting.

I know you don't need me to tell you this. Extra sleep is not a bad thing. :)

I wish I were able to get too much sleep, at least once in a while. 5 or 6 hours is typical. If I get 8 or 9 I feel great all day.

I looked and it seems like the definition of what a pullet is varies from source to source. Some say any female chicken that's not yet laying eggs. Others 4 weeks. I think I also saw something like between 12 weeks to first egg laid. All I know is a pullet will become a hen, and a chick can be either male or female. It's confusing. Merriam Webster says...

Ate a big salad from my garden with lettuce, raw collards and watercress. I picked over 2 pounds of leaf lettuce from the garden today so lots of salads for a while.

You are such a great gardener. Salads from your garden! Yum!

I edited my post about the pullet to show what 3 pullets looked like at 3 months. One was not a pullet at all. lol

I should add that hatchery birds grow and mature much faster than show birds. They are skinnier and smaller than show birds as well. Most have a more production layer body shape. Hatchery birds do tend to lay much more.

Take brahma for an example. Those can be up to 2 pounds smaller.

Silkies have the wrong body shape, lack of bulk, and sparse feathering.

Spring hatched, hatchery silkies mature at about 6 months. Non-hatchery lines take 9-12 months. Fall hatched birds mature faster because of the increasing sun as they start to mature. I can get 2 months off that by hatching in September.

Haha! You have another boy chick chicken cockerel rooster thing.

I like that fencepost roost bar. I have a lot of those and I might use one to make a new place for the chickens to hang out.
They love the roosting bars in the outdoor section of the coop. DH says easy to make too.

Those 3 chickens were last year. So far I don't think I have a cockerel this time, but perhaps I need to photograph them. Last time I didn't discover it until I looked at that photo I shared. lol
