Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I didn't do a lot today. Looked at the garden trying to decide where I can plant some leaf lettuce seeds and a second crop of pickling cucumbers. And I rerouted the rope that I use to manually lift the chicken coop door so instead of being outside, I can control the door from inside the secure run. That'll work much better for me.

Got hungry for pizza again so another quick one is in the oven, this time with herbs, tomato sauce, pepperoni, chives, yellow bell pepper and cheese. Another 10 or 15 minutes in the oven and it'll be ready.

When I moved the rope the teenager chickens found a hatchling lizard, maybe 3/32 inch in diameter and 2 and a half inches long. They played keep away for a while then the pullet with the yellow leg band slurped it down. The lizard was in the chickens' nest box, which was weird.

We have a lot of garter snakes. I have to pause the mower and move them sometimes. They don't go anywhere near the chicken pens.

Had to rescue one from the cats once. Old dogs would sniff them then leave be. Hermes wants to eat them I think.

We see the little black snakes here from time to time. I actually saw two entwined with each other one time. Wonder if I still have that photo somewhere. I don't really know anything about snakes, so I don't know if that was a friendly activity or a fight.

I've never been too afraid of the critters. In So Cal I had a healthy respect for the rattlers. Give them plenty of space is all. They don't come running out of holes to attack people. They have to feel threatened to strike.

I'm sure it was a "friendly" activity. :lau

These are pics of rattlesnakes getting "friendly" in a drain culvert. I was camping out at Banks Lake, and the culvert was about 10 feet from my travel trailer.

I had to save a garter snake from the chickens yesterday, it had taken shelter in a bag of dried leaves so when I dumped the leaves in the run, whoops there's a snake! Tried pushing it out of a hole in the fence and it crawled right back wanting to get in the bag, so I had to carry it away before the chickens spotted it.
