Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I got one questionable egg yesterday that was cracked but not leaking. I cooked it and mixed it with wet feed and gave it to the young chicks. They loved it.

I gave the rest of the flock eggshells mixed with dry feed and a container of plain feed wetted down. They still look out the window like they want to go outside. Maybe in a few weeks when the chicks are bigger and meaner. LOL

I got one nice egg today. I had to block off the nest box because all the New Hampshires were sleeping in it. The hens found a corner of the run to lay their eggs in.

We picked up a pizza from Sahara in Winlock. I did not expect to like it at all. Last time we went, a few years ago, we were not impressed at all. This time it was delicious. Did the sauce change? Did the management change? Was it picking it up at 4 instead of 5? No idea, but I'm happy about it. Now we can have the occasional pizza that I don't have to make.

its a little warm out side what are you all doing to keep your chickens Cool i noticed that they were panting this afternoon went out and added ice to their water buckets. Was thinking of adding a old Box Fan in the run that's just sitting in our shed. Any thoughts????
My chickens are in the shade all day, under a metal roof on the north side of my shop. I don't do anything to cool them down. When it gets in the upper 90s they hold their wings out a little to stay cool, but they manage it ok.

It's always 10 degrees cooler out where the chickens are than at the house, and my immediate area is generally cooler than the weather man says, so I've never had a problem with chickens overheating. However I do run small irrigation sprinklers under the apple trees and berries on hot days and that is in their free range space. That creates an even cooler spot for them. No fans or anything.

If I did have a problem I would probably invest in a mister for them. I've seen other chicken folks do that.

When it's really hot outside I've given my chicken frozen treats in the afternoon. I have some chopped, blanched kale stems in the freezer right now for a worst case scenario.

But the way my runs are set up they can burrow down into the dirt and cool themselves off pretty well. Giving them frozen stuff probably eases my mind more than it makes them feel better.
