I didn't know that garlic adapts. Interesting.Garlic is cleaned and stored on wire in baskets. Works great. Only 40 heads left that we get to eat this year. I set 12 aside for planting and we have eaten the rest already. 12 is about twice what we planted last year I think.
I read in Farmers Almanac today that some old time farmers of garlic say it learns, so it's best to grow your own because it adapts to your soil and improves each year. Guess that means we won't do anything different this year with the soil. Last year we enriched it with compost from the veggie pile and the chicken pile. Worked great.
Well, I did save the 12 larges heads, but didn't take the cloves apart to check size. We'll see what happens. I'm happy with this year's harvest, but would like more next year. It's early September an we have used 16 heads already. We didn't start using them until a month ago.I didn't know that garlic adapts. Interesting.
This fall I'm going to save the largest cloves for planting and eat the smaller ones. The large cloves grow into bigger heads, or so I've read.
I watched three pullets lay eggs today. Yellow and Yellow/Blue didn't lay so they'll probably lay tomorrow. Orange laid her biggest egg yet today. Blue and Pink laid nice little pullet eggs again.
Picked another few pound of tomatoes, so now I have enough to make my first batch of salsa, probably Thursday or Friday.
Uh oh...they are growing up. Soon the squabbles will begin. Are you going to try to keep all of them? I can't remember.I should be getting fertile eggs soon. I caught the dominant New Hampshire cockerel "in the act" with the big Orange banded New Hampshire pullet. She gave a good shake after mating and didn't act like it was an imposition. And that's exactly the pairing I wanted for getting some hatching eggs.
Strange thing. The cockerels are 19 weeks old but haven't started crowing yet. I kind of hope they never do. LOL
I'm keeping the one RIR cockerel and one of the NH cockerels, and the 5 NH pullets. It's about time for the older Barred Rocks to go somewhere else.Uh oh...they are growing up. Soon the squabbles will begin. Are you going to try to keep all of them? I can't remember.
Unfortunately, I think we have changed our mind on that. We may be getting close to the end with Cooper.I'm keeping the one RIR cockerel and one of the NH cockerels, and the 5 NH pullets. It's about time for the older Barred Rocks to go somewhere else.
