Hey Julie girl! How you be? I for one can say I love that this thread involves other topics besides chickens. And I am a big contributor, even though associated with the 'club' often. I love my chickens and everyone elses but do get bored. There is so much more to life! LOL I do tire of long posts though. I can get about a third of the way and quit. I guess I don't have the patience.

Me either...I thought I was just getting old !

Oops, didn't get on this weekend and now it's Tuesday already. Ok, so just let me know when. GF bread sounds great - I have a lot of nice cheeses already and would make some soup/stew.

I have talked to the Allergy Clinic..thinking the appt would be this week, right ?
Wrong.
They are booked until December 12th...and that for exams, then another date for the actual tests.
I am upset about the time due to the fact that it may go over until January, so that means I have to pay the deductible all over again ....

If I get the testing done before the end of the year it will cost me little.

So...anyways, I am available any day for a get together except Wed & Fridays...unless the bank calls to sign papers.
So...wanna make a date or cancel ?

PHOENIX (AP) — A hiker died Monday after he was attacked by a swarm of bees and fell about 150 feet off a cliff at a popular recreation area in Phoenix, authorities said.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say the man was pronounced dead at the scene in the Echo Canyon area of Camelback Mountain.

Two other hikers were airlifted out after each was stung about 300 times. Paramedics said both men were hospitalized in serious but stable condition and expected to recover.

Fire officials said the three men were attacked by bees about 3:45 p.m. on a trail near Ice Box Canyon. The two survivors hid in a small crevice to avoid the swarm until rescuers arrived.

Some of the rescue workers wore white protective suits to keep them from also being stung.

The names and ages of the hikers weren't immediately released.

Sometime back in the 1970's my family was hiking the Hoh River area, and part of our group ran into a yellow jack hive. The 3 of them that were together, manged to outrun most of the bees, but the still got stung multiple times, before they could get away. It could have been much worse than it was. We also have encountered bees in the Lake Shasta, at least their was some warning about the hive. I seem to recall that any one that is stung more than 200 times can possibly die from the venom, even though they had not been l to bee venom before the attack.

I had an encounter with little red bumble bees in my back yard. The bumbles had made a nest in a bird house, without my knowing about. I went out to pull some weeds, and one of the bumbles kept coming at me even as I was trying to get away from it. That bumble hunted me down, and stung me on the cheek. It proved to be fatal to the entire hive. We couldn't figure out how to safely move the hive to a better location, without being hurt ourselves.

So bees and wasps, can be a very big danger will out hiking. It is often very difficult to spot a hive, before you get to close to it. Our lives back then became safer, after my dad tore the cartilage in his knee while hiking on our last trip in 1975. My dad then took up boating, and I think that they only had to call a full mayday once. I am still grateful that I missed that trip.
For future reference. Wait until dark and the bees are asleep. Move the bird house. We moved one last summer.

I wish I could understand chick-speak. This morning, Blacke flew to the top of the huge porch box, slammed into the wire cover, fell back down to the sand on the floor, then went over and hid in the corner silently for a while. I wasn't sure what to do, so I just sat there and watched her to see if she'd be OK. After a while, she came back out and started with this high-pitched, very fast chirping - it almost sounded like she was either trying explain herself out of her embarrassment, or she was complaining heavily to the other chicks. It was pretty funny!

It makes me wonder... do chickens get embarrassed when they do something silly?

Maybe she was cussing.

While hiking I've been concerned about many things but bees never been one of them. Just unreal.

Years ago while hiking around Glide OR, myself and BF (not Einstein) and my 2 kids 3 & 5 years old...and suddenly I heard son screaming & turned to see BF slapping him all over.
As a mama bear, I ran to kick BF's butt for slapping my son, when I noticed hordes of Bald faced Hornets swarming all over.
They came out of a hole in the ground, and chased us for what seemed like a mile...BIG HORNETS !!!
Son was stung 10-15 times...but was OK .

The bread I have is made by Franz somewhere in Oregon, and is available at most all stores Franz serves now.
It is awesome bread !
There is white & whole 'grains' with amaranth seeds on the outside...very nutty good and light & airey which has aludded all other GF breads so far.
hats off to Franz for finally making a great GF bread in a GF facillty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, they MUST make a pizza crust with the same recipe (like a Boboli Crust) so we can take & bake our own Pizza !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
