Okay, I keep worrying that I have more cockerels lurking in my brooder. Can you all help me figure it out?

This is Jerk, a SLW that is growing like a weed. Dominant bird, but not very aggressive. The other SLW, Tandoori, is smaller but has and identical comb and is pushier than Jerk. Tandoori was forcing another chick to get down off the feeders last night by grabbing a toe or feathers.



Next one I'm concerned about is Tikka, one of the spotted Sussex. Tikka's comb is longer than Masala's comb. Here is Tikka. Sorry for the poor shot, she was wigged out by the camera and wouldn't let me get close:

Last one is one of the GLW. Both of these chicks are really lagging behind the SLW. They are only one week younger, but they are tiny in comparison to Jerk! I started with 4 and 2 have died (no visible reason). This one started showing growth this week, and then suddenly last night it was jumping on all the other birds and taking on Tandoori, breast to breast. Its comb is shaped differently than all the other Wyandottes - very flat and wide. It's not very friendly either, but I haven't been making much effort to tame it since it looked like all 4 GLW might die.



Anyone have an opinion one way or the other on these? I'd really appreciate the help!

This is Johnny and Mumsy at the 2011 Washington Midsummer Renaissance Faire in Bonney Lake. He was just a 6 month old rescue production type RIR. I am interested in acquiring a few hens as company for this guy. It's a lux life on my 1/2 acre property. Orchard, lawn, high fencing, electrical predator barrier, custom poultry barn, and 24/7 loving care. I have the ability to raise Johnny and his production flock and also a high end standard bred show type flock separate. More than enough room and facility. My husband and I are nearing retirement age. No other pets or agenda. Keep us in mind if you have healthy quality birds.

I decided my chicks need a punching bag. So, I went to Reber and got a chick brick and hung it in there. They're scared to death of it. Weirdos! Oh well, having it in there sure quieted the brooder down. Blackie flew into the wall of the brooder again today.

Nothings gonna stop that chick from flying... except, maybe, a big scary chick brick.

And, thankfully, enablers who can say "yes" or "no" to good/bad birds. I tell ya - I'm nervous bringing grown bird in though... I'm terrified of my girls getting Cocci from new birds. That's one of our biggest reasons for hatching.

So... when you buy birds, you have no idea what kind of feed they've been fed. If I end up buying pullets that have not been fed medicated chick starter, what should I do? Feed them medicated for a while?

Haven't read all the posts yet today... maybe this has been answered... if I buy grown pullets, how far away from my current coop/run does the quarantine coop/tractor need to be set-up? My big girls have free-ranged all over the back yard, but I clean up their poop every day. Granted - I can't clean up every little smear. Is it going to be a problem if I set the tractor up on a space that my big girls have free-ranged?
