Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I think we need updated photos of Latte! Still keeping fingers crossed for you that Latte is the little girl you're hoping for. Sounds promising so far!

I'll try and get new photos soon. S/he's turning a darker red color. We still don't know who mom was - she's doesn't look anything like a Salmon Fav hen though, now - other than the 5 toes.

Quote: Sounds like a good plan! Our bushes and plants were carefully manicured by the girls who carved out plenty of nice sheltered areas for themselves so it's not so overgrown that it's hiding any varmints. I've seen where they're coming from and it's the overgrown brush in the yard behind us where our neighbors from he** were either evicted or abandoned the house and it's been empty for a good 3 or 4 months. Since there's no people or dogs over there anymore I'm afraid it's becoming a rodent haven. As soon as it gets dark I've stood outside and watched them jump up on top of our fence or climb the trees on the other side of our fence and travel along the branches until they can reach my coop roof. I'm considering tossing something deadly over the fence for them to feast on, but I'm afraid they'd come to my yard to die and I don't want to endanger my chickens or dogs.

Is your bale still intact? I've seen some people plant in them and thought that was kind of a cool idea. Is it hay or straw?

Yep! She's just as old as Pudge (my avatar) but she's not mature yet at seven months old. Very small comb and cute little wattles. She's a very interesting bird. The last rooster I had, she would not bend. He left her alone because she would challenge him to staredowns and win. She's a sweety with me. She'll fly up to my shoulder and nestle. I could keep going, but I won't.

Don't stop! More... more... more. Well, just saying I have a keen interest in BA's so love to hear stories about them. It amazes me how many people tell me how sweet their BA's are but don't take stuff from their other birds. Interesting dichotomy. I cannot wait to have some!

They look like penguins as chicks. Pudge got her name from her chubby little face. She was the cutest chick. Today, she's my favorite bird. When I go in the pen to visit them, she always hustles over to me. The others do too, but she's quicker. I have a little green gardening stool sitting in there so that I can sit and they can sit on my lap. Sometimes she hops up on my lap before I can place my towel. She's a great big fluffy brat, but I enjoy having a bird that will cuddle with me for half an hour or more at a time. Then it's time to fix my hair. She keeps trying to eat a single curl (varies from day to day) over and over again. It is then stiff and crunchy for the rest of the day.

These two are my first BAs, but I've determined that I must have at least one in my flock at all times. Same with BRs.

One final story about Pudge: I once knocked a half-golf-ball-sized chunk of suet out of the holder (the suet is for the wild birds). The chickens got excited and started picking at the small crumbs first, but Pudge struck the large piece like a viper and sprinted off with it. George (BSL) gave chase, but she came back empty-beaked. I went around to the back and found Pudge finishing off the last crumbs.

I got a big kick out of your stories. Thanks! Great idea having the stool and towel handy for some one on one time and hair dressing.

Nothing like getting some hen hugging. Betsy Barr Rock was always my fav as she would let me pet her. But since the raccoon attack last summer she has become much more skittish. She is doing good otherwise though in her solo existence loving herself in the mirror everyday.

Anyway, I am so looking forward to having some "penguin chicks". Very cute names you chose BTW. Hilarious Pudge with determination that even George could not overcome pigged out on the suet. I am no good at figuring out a lot of the abbrev's though. What is a BSL? Is there a chart somewhere I can refer to as many times reading here I don't know what breed of chicken is being shared?

OH, I am going to be in a VILE mood today. Everything I've picked up, I've dropped, and the stupid dog has demanded to be out five times already, starting at forty minutes before my alarm went off, which was coincidentally forty minutes after I woke up and dragged my husband out of the chair where he was sleeping and put him to bed.

Can't understand why he's having so very much back pain.

BSL means Black Sexlink. I love them. George is my second. The first, Xena, was grabbed by a coyote years ago. That was one of our saddest chicken-keeping days. BUT ENOUGH OF THAT! We named her George after Curious George. We had told a feed store guy that there was a dead chick in the BSL brooder and he picked it up. George shot over because she was so interested in what was going on. I quickly scooped her up. She likes to try to style my hair too, but Pudge is the master stylist. As chicks, they went INSANE over my hair. I had to wear a scarf over my head while I was in the room or they would just try to eat my hair constantly. I'd take it off and they would be so happy. They'd stop whatever they were doing and fly to my shoulders. I only had four chicks (Muffet is my sweety BR), so they could fit comfortably.

Alright, if I keep going, I won't be able to stop.
