how big of a run are we talking about? and do you have access to scrap lumber from a tear down or remodel or??

The run is approximately 8 x 40 ft. I know that the weight of the snow will pull down the ground cover. Scrap lumber is a GREAT idea....but I am not sure where to get. I am going to put out feelers and see what I can do. We used to have a mill, but it was shut down last year....but you have me inspired...I am going to look for scrap lumber. Thank you so much.

What is a "cast earth" house or "cob" house? Are they like straw bale homes? We have straw bale homes here.

You so could do it too....I am going to go check out CL for free stuff in my possible area.

BTW that is a beautiful dog !!!!!

Thank you and sorry for the small pic I thought it was bigger. BTW do ya know what he is?

Aussie Blue Heeler, also called a cattle dog. We had several on the ranch I hung out at in CA: (Lake County down to Napa and Sonoma)They also had cattle dog and sheep dog trials there...the largest single private holding of land in the state...huge ranch. Great wine, awesome cattle and some friends that work there.
Sorry, I am distracted at the moment...it is MONSOONING HERE...1 drop will clock your a** and knock you out...lightening, thunder, filling a 300 gallon tank in 1 hr.....

Cast earth is poured like concrete but is a mix of subsoil and gypsum to create solid strong walls.

Cob house is a very old method of using mud blobs (cobs) which is a mix of straw clay and subsoil.

Both styles need a good roof to keep the earth walls dry but surprisingly earth walls can soak up to 25% of water with no lasting effects. I've heard of a cob house which went through a flood where the walls were engulfed in water and after the waters receded the walls took some time to dry but were still structurally sound.
