A friend of mine just offered me her old chicken coop that's just been sitting in her back yard. I don't have a clue what it looks like, what kind of shape it's in or anything. But, I'm taking it!

Worst comes to worst I've helped her clean up her yard and my kids get a great bonfire! When the burn ban is lifted of course. Dang nosey neighbors.

Hi all it been awhile since I posted. Welcome to anyone that is new!! Between getting hit by a drunk driver on tuesday and losing my second chickie a couple of days ago,

it has been a long week. The one I lost was one of my cuckoo marans. I sure wish I knew what was getting them. Whatever is making them sick is a real mistery!! The other cochin who was sick appears to be coming out of it and is feeling well finally eating and drinking well but is still a little thin but she is catching up. I finally have someone coming to build me a coop. It will also have a large roof attatched to it so that the gals can have a safe dry covered area to go in during the winter. I can't wait till it is done and show the gals their new home

Well hope everyone has a great holiday weekend.

I'm thinking to get some marans next spring. I love the dark colored eggs! Is it easy to tell the difference between a cuckoo maran and a barred rock? I've heard they look a lot alike... Sorry about your maran, though

Hope nobody else gets sick!

I have a barred rock pullet that is 10 weeks. I started suspecting she was my rock at about 4-5 weeks. Before that she looked pretty much like all the other black chicks in my brooder to me.

I have 3 Cuckoo Marans that are 2 1/2 weeks old. They looked like they would be barred from the 3rd day... feathers were coming in with white bars on tips. I think the cuckoo maran female is darker than the barred rock.... (My interpretation) but that it is not easy unless side by side.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in here soon. And then we will all know for sure.

yay! Congrats!
I can't wait! My eldest are about 17 weeks old now. I've started peeking in the nests each morning just in case I've got an early bloomer. So exciting!

My youngest girls haven't started laying yet. I will know once I se my first colored egg. My older hens seem to be taking a break although I have noticed I have to start looking to see if they are nesting somewhere in the yard. I keep finding stray nests, then collect the eggs, but then the girls abandon that nest. I found 2 eggs last night in their old nesting barn so I am hoping they will start laying again, I hate buying eggs at the store they never taste as good. Congratulations to all those who gals have started laying.

My rhode island red bantam just layed her 1st wee little egg yesterday. Then today one of my just starting to lay hens layed a really thin shelled egg plus there was on the board what looked like poo with thin egg shell. So off to del's to get some oyster shell. I guess they are not getting enough calcium in their feed.

Welcome to all the new peeple here

Hi All! I am from Woodinville, This is my first time having chickens. I have had them since may. This will be my first winter with them. Any advice on getting through the rainy, cold and damp fall, winter and spring? Nice to see all of the chicken owners here in Wa.
