No they're still big 'fraidy cats, as my daughter would put it, although they seem to be making themselves very comfortable in their "stall"

We're going to survey our building materials tomorrow and see if we can't come up with some kind of day pen at least for them so they can be outside. I don't *think* a hawk could carry them off, could it? I do worry about coyotes though, I've seen them walking up and down the road at dawn and dusk, and we leave well before dawn to go to work.

ETA: Hey rainplace, how do you think eggnog would be made with duck eggs? I've never made it myself before, but now I'm dying to try.

KMHunter, sure thing, just drop on by!

Hawks won't usually bother ducks. Coyotes, yes. However coyotes generally don't jump fences that are 5ft or more, however they will dig. Raccoons will climb.

You can do with them exactly what you do for your chickens. The only difference being that they need enough water to submerge their bills when they have food.

Nyrial,
I am looking for a really cheap or free dog house. Rainplace told me when I was thinking about getting ducks, that it would do for a place for them to sleep. They like to sleep all bunched up on the ground I guess. Then you could just build an enclosure around that. I am also still waiting to hear from my cousin about the kiddie pool. TTYS!

Edit for really bad grammer!

Duvall is a beautiful place! Thanks though. I feel blessed every morning. We've put quite a bit of work into the place as well. It's so great to finally have the poultry. We moved here in May of 2008 from the west side and had nothing for them at the time, so I had to find homes for what we had over there.

It's pretty wet on the west side, but we're still dry over here in Eastern Washington. I doubt if much has changed since you've been gone!

Especially if you can put a door on the the doghouse and close it up at night. My ducks put themselves to be in the shed/duckhouse at night. I just have to lock it up.

Current hard times have left me like many others unemployed and struggling to get by. I have a small flock of about 25 chickens that are counting on me and I am running out of options. I’ve made use of all my fruit trees and everything else I can think of. Can’t afford the feed store and the meager table scraps aren’t enough. I started raising them for the eggs and they are much like family pets so making them dinner is out of the question. So if there is a kind and helpful soul out there who has some feed they could part with we would really appreciate it. I would be more than happy to trade labor for it as well. Thanks

Anyway I was thinking of trying to help them out. I was wondering if there is anyone in MAple Valley that knows of a feed store I could call. I was thinking of trying to purchase a couple of bags of feed over the phone for them to go pick up. DOes anyone else have a suggestion. All us chicken lovers need to stick together. Anyone have some suggestions????

It's great to want to help out, but at some point they are going to have to make a decision. 25 chickens are quite a few w/o a job. As hard as it may be, they probably should sell half of them. The money from that should be able to allow them to purchase enough food for a while. If they keep maybe 10 of their best layers, they also should be getting eggs for consumption which helps with the grocery bill. It's a great gesture on your part though to want to help out crazychickenluver!
